You may remember you gave me some help about Alex Wright of Charlton Athletic who died tragically in a bathing accident at Torquay? I am now looking at another player and came across one of his two brothers who played for Torquay United. You may have this information already but here it is just in case! One good turn deserves another!
John Henderson Calder born Lochgelly, Fife on 13th October 1911. He was a Right Half who signed for Cowdenbeath from Rosslyn (a Junior, i.e. non-league, club) on 15th December 1931. There is no record of his Cowdenbeath appearances. He moved to Montrose on 2nd August 1934 where he made 34 league appearances (11 goals) in 1934/35. He signed for Leith Athletic on 30th May 1935 and played 18 league games (2 goals) but his contract was cancelled on 7th August 1936. Where was he in season 1936/37? I pick him up next at Torquay United in 1937/38 and then at Hartlepool United in 1938/39. He died in Kirkcaldy, Fife in 1989 – age 77.

Thank you for this, Bluedragon.
Working from the centenary history alone there's no information regarding John Calder's immediate stop before Plainmoor. He made his debut against Reading at the start of November 1937 and played in six successive games (including an FA Cup tie). That was it; he played no more beyond the week before Christmas. The book records his next club as Hartlepools United. Looking at Calder's Torquay career, from this distance, it could be mistaken as a loan move.
