Ah, the good old days, when it says that Gigg Lane had a capacity of 35,000. I assume the Safety Advisory Group was only a twinkle in Lancashire County Council's eye back then. Now, all those who went on the fortnights holiday to the Hotel Solmar are probably about ready for a return trip. There's good news and bad news according to TripAdvisor. Sadly The Solmar is no more....but maybe even more appropriately for those who went in 1973, it's now a retirement home !! Only a few weeks into the New Year of 1973 and the attendance figure is 1973. Let's hope we get more than 2014 inside Plainmoor on Saturday, should we be fortunate enough to be able to stage a game.

Jack Edwards' last programme notes before the chop.
A World Cup winning winger in the Bury team. The lad McDermott looks useful.
I thought for a second that the Pook piece meant that Torquay beat Wolves 3-2 in a practice match. I assume it means an England Youth XI.

I bought one of those commemorative covers and it later proved to be one of the first items I ever posted on TFF. 1898-1973: the club's 75th anniversary. That would have been just about right, wouldn't it? Ah, the good old days, when it says that Gigg Lane had a capacity of 35,000. I assume the Safety Advisory Group was only a twinkle in Lancashire County Council's eye back then. AJ on the ball again assiduously checking the small print. But, to champion Bury's spirit of independent municipalism, I would suggest that any ruling - or neglect thereof for that matter - would have had nothing to do with bureaucrats in faraway Preston (of whom I was once vaguely one myself). Instead it would have been the proud County Borough of Bury (1889-1974). "Pack 'em in"; a fine old motto for both Gigg Lane and the local black pudding industry. Now, all those who went on the fortnights holiday to the Hotel Solmar are probably about ready for a return trip. There's a weekender too for that season's Football League Cup final. Torquay United holidays to Spain. We've encountered these before and I wonder if it's not time for a revival. Just imagine a coach load or two of some of the main characters from each of the Torquay United Internet forums. You could make one of those long-running TV comedy series with that sort of material.
