I’ll take that as a maybe then. 🐛 The women are just about independent of the club. Ooooh…I see. Sad though it be, should TUFC cease to exist, or even turn non-professional, I don’t think that will bode well for the ladies either. We’ll have a better idea in a couple of weeks of course. |

TUWFC match report - really worth a read! In the last 12 months I have seen Torquay, women win the county cup on penalties, the lionesses win the euros from an extra-time goal, and the finalissima cup on penalties. I think I went through more of an emotional rollercoaster yesterday than in any of those matches!

Looks like the women are also playing in the Premier League Cup (top sides in the division ) with an away fixture against Sherborne on the 2nd April. Not really interested in this competition as the real cup final is away to Liskeard and they could do without any further distractions particularly as neither of the two sides we still need to play in the league are in this competition. - the Sherborne game was initially put back to this coming Sunday, but very sensibly we have now withdrawn from this competition. This gives us a couple of weeks for those able to get back to full fitness for what is our end of season cup final at home to Wootton Bassett where we need a win for the championship. |

It has been a fantastic 12 months for the women where they have really kicked on from winning the County Cup Final last year. ( Exeter have just won it this weekend on penalties after losing on penalties last year) and have really enjoyed following them this season. Women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK so 4th tier football would be a significant achievement from where they were just a few years ago and put the club on the national map. Really pleased to have written regular match reports on this site so as have a good record of this season and fingers crossed for this Yin and Yang weekend.

Have only seen a couple of their games this season and thoroughly enjoyed them both. Those that denigrate the women’s game are missing the point - it’s not the same as the men’s game and it’s not supposed to be. I’ve also watched a few games on the telly. I enjoy the deference given to the ref and the fact that some of the players go down obviously hurt but don’t make a meal of it. Those players in the Premier League (where I see it most often) who feign injury in front of the cameras need to take a leaf out of their book. |

link - confirmation that the game is to be played at the Liverton ground with a 2 pm kick-off on Sunday. For those of you that haven’t been there before, go to Drumbridges on the A38 and take the Liverton turn off before Bovey Tracey turn off. Look out for the Old Liverton Road on your right, which is also signposted for the Star Inn and funny enough for Old Liverton. Go past the Star Inn and about 100 m further on take the left into a country lane at Cummins Cross, signposted to Halford and there is also a Dartmoor National Park Boundary stone on the corner of this junction. Parking is not massive at the ground and if you’re not there early you may want to park here and walk down this lane for about 10 minutes walk and the ground can be found on the left. link - admission is £4 and supporters will be given a player of the season voting slip on the way in. Tough call to make as it really has been a team effort this year with a number of players coming in and out of the team, so personally will focus on someone who has been there for at least 3/4 of the season.

In the best of Torquay United traditions, the women go into this game with a bit of an injury crisis after finishing with just 8 fully fit players and two half fit players a fortnight ago. I assume Connie Pengelly will be suspended for this game and will be interested to see if the half fit duo of Dani Wyatt and Laura Lewis can recover in time and play at least some part in this game. Hopefully the previously absent Mia Preston, Kiara-Jade Robins, Natalie Warman and Daisy Self will be back in contention to bolster numbers as suspect Sasha Mole, Rhi Bailey and Anthea Kaptein will not be available.
Technically Wootton Bassett are not quite relegated yet, but they have the same sort of chance as Torquay men’s team have of staying up. They need to win their final three games and hope that both Ilminster and Warminster lose their remaining five games between them. Wootton Bassett are sort of on their best run of form having drawn away at Bishops Lydeard last Sunday 0-0 and beaten Ilminster 5-0 at home the previous Sunday. They did lose 9-0 away at Forest Green back in March, showing the gulf between the top and bottom of this league. The women have already played Wootton Bassett twice this season, winning away at the end of January 4 -0 in the league and at home, back in October, 5 -2 in the FA cup.

Well, they did it! A narrow, one nil win, which was so much more comfortable than the scoreline suggested, not a classic but was enough for promotion into the National League South West division for the first time in their history.
With the return of Mia Preston, Natalie Warman and Daisy Self into the lineup together with Rhi Bailey and Anthea Kaptein, it meant we again had a very strong side. The first half was literally almost exclusively played in the Wootton Bassett half so great was our Dominance with the Torquay keeper having to deal with two leisurely back passes and collecting one through ball. She won’t have had an easier match this season.
Early on Mia Preston on the right wing did some good work to get clear and pass to Esme Kilburn Thompson well inside the area but her shot saw the ball go just over the crossbar when should have been on target. We had a number of corners where the ball didn’t drop kindly for us and it finally took a long range shot from defender Emma Hunt to dip just below the bar to take a well deserved lead. Shortly after Daisy Self got through for a one-on-one with their keeper, but was unable to round her.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first with Torquay still in the ascendancy with Mia Preston having the best chance which hit the inside of the post and which somehow kept out. Things did get a little tense towards the end and while Wootton Bassett forays into the Torquay half were rare, they did manage to get a corner in injury time, but luckily it came to nothing and it was able to be cleared quite comfortably.
A little bit of relief and much celebration at full time which saw the women able to lift the trophy before a shower saw everyone decamp to the bar where player of the season was awarded to Ocean Latto. Esme Kilburn Thompson was awarded player of the match to round off a successful season which saw them pick up their second trophy in 12 months.

As an aside, Cardiff won today to take both the championship and promotion instead of Exeter so gives us a local Derby in a league where there will be much more travelling next season.

link - very good news in that the whole squad has been retained with everyone having the opportunity to improve and prove they can compete at the next level above. Lots of young players in the team that are still getting better! The team spirit is excellent and cannot be overstated . Probably need to add a few more players to give a bit more depth to the squad and more options off the bench.

link - as the women’s team gear up for the next level, for the first time they are introducing season tickets just £45 for adults and £20 for under 18s. With all the additional costs they will have, any purchases will be a great help.
