...from £2,626 to £1,826 per annum. Divided by 17 pros, that still gives just under £107 8s 3d per player per annum. WMN 24/7/23

More evidence in Jon's press clipping of Torquay United's far-and-wide recruitment policy as early as the 1920s. I particularly like the sound of Miller, the lad from Gainsborough, who had never missed a penalty. I assume he was arriving when the other Miller - he of the 1915 match fixing scandal - was heading back to Scotland.
The issue of "fixing" has, of course, raised its ugly head again this week. Did I ever tell you of the non-league game last season when I encountered a student from China who had "a job" reporting football scores? Didn't think anything of it at the time. But the game ended 4-5 after the home team being 3-1 up. Makes you wonder.....

Miller the centre-half / penalty taker stayed for two full seasons. His finest moment was scoring the winning goal against Yeovil (a penalty!) that secured our big Cup match with a Football League team - Aberdare Athletic. The signing we got most value from was Brown who stayed for fifteen years (barring a single season as Dartmouth United player-manager) as player, coach or manager. It is a shame that Fred Rice (no relation to Martin!) doesn't appear on my list of 1,000+ post 1927 players. He was a regular for TUFC in the five seasons 1922-27 but only played reserve football in 1927/28.
