Result: 1-1 (Murphy).
Attendance: 1989.
My one and only visit to Scunthorpe and it turned out to be quite an epic journey.
At that time British Rail were offering cheap fares to various cities across the country and Sheffield was one of them so I decided to go.
I was expecting a lot of other supporters to take up the offer but when I arrived at Newton Abbot Station there was just a handful including my friend Sally(see day trip to Cleethorpes)and was told by her that the return journey would only go as far as Bristol.I decided to carry on with the journey and so did the others(8 altogether I think).

The journey up was uneventful but were a little late arriving at Scunthorpe but made it to ground just in time.
The return fare from Sheffield to Scunthorpe was more expensive.
Don't remember too much about the match but some young Scunthorpe lads tried to be hard and surrounded us,Sally told them to clear off and they did,we weren't bothered any more.
After the match we were allowed in to the Social Club due to the persuasion of Sally.
The Torquay players were in there and John Turner had a chat with us.
We then had a Taxi organised for us to take us back to Scunthorpe Station where we bumped in to Maurice Cox who travelled with us back to Sheffield,I think he was gong back to his University.
After the Train left Sheffield we were befriended by a couple of Leeds United fans who probably thought we were fellow fans at first. They were from Mansfield.
Just before we arrived in Chesterfield the Train suddenly stopped, apparently someone had pulled the communication cord.
When we arrived at Chesterfield the Leeds fans got off and just afterwards a couple of burly blokes(transport police ?) came in to our compartment and started accusing us of pulling the cord.
They just stood there asking for one of us to own up,it was very scary, then suddenly they grabbed one lad and dragged him off the train,I can never forget the terrified look on his face.
Luckily the two Leeds fans were still on the platform and saw what was happening and stuck up for us.The lad was let back on and we carried on with our journey.
At this stage I was getting worried about where to stay the night in Bristol, but Sally came to the rescue again(no funny comments please),she had a friend in Bristol who ran a Bed and Breakfast and apparently she had organised for some of us to stay there for nothing, but some lads,I think slept rough at Temple Meads Station.
Because there were no Trains back to Devon in the morning some coaches were organised to take us to Exeter. They were also some Plymouth supporters on the coach(where were they on the way back from?)who were very friendly.
