Good to see a contribution in that York programme from Mr John Lovis. I hope he is well. As for our other historian, I imagine he'd have been swotting for exams at the time and getting the younger boys to "f a g" for him.
Mention of the Torquay United All-Weather Complex and coach Mike Hickman taking players out to primary schools. As for those mascots, would anybody on here care to own up to being one of them? I wonder how many still follow the club all these years later.
A welcome to St Agnes FC up from Cornwall. A fine place to watch football should you ever get the chance. Perhaps Alpine Joe was one of their party when they were royally entertained after the game by "our popular singer/organist Eric Webber". Something familiar about that name but I can't place it.

Good to see a contribution in that York programme from Mr John Lovis. I hope he is well. As for our other historian, I imagine he'd have been swotting for exams at the time and getting the younger boys to "f a g" for him. But what of dirty dealings within the Football Leagues Executive Staffs Association and their, frankly, astonishing decisions with regard to programme of the year?! Potential back-handers from Hereford and Lincoln to promote their bland offerings, perhaps? While Reading are left in the proverbial wilderness, maybe their naive honesty led them to think quality was enough. But we were right in the middle of the Thatcher revolution and society was never the same again. Bucks Fizz were about to knock Shaky's This Ole House off the number one slot and young, upwardly-mobile professionals were seen wandering around the Square Mile carrying large black bricks in their hands. With an aerial sticking out of one end! Meanwhile, Katharine Hamnett was struggling to find a smaller font for her t-shirt collection... It's a sad day when politics gets involved with sport, but at least that doesn't happen anymore.

I was surprised to see that Mike Green was still in charge. I had forgotten he had lasted four years as Manager, but of course he only had another month to go before he was relieved of his duties.

Rumour has it that we were headed for that prestigious programme award until the club's business manager disgraced himself at the ceremony. Details have always been sketchy but I'll embellish them when I next post on the South Devon Soccer Forum. And, if there's absolutely no truth in what I say, so be it. No point in letting the facts ruin a good story.
Tucked away in Scene Four is an observation regarding the seemingly unstoppable rise of Grimsby Town. Will they reach the (old) first division?
The answer was "no" but Grimsby did finish 7th in the second tier in 1981 and 5th in 1984. Indeed, my first (of only two) visits to Blundell Park was for the manic final game of the 1983/84 season against Chelsea. I must go back sometime to check where Grimsby are now.
