I never saw the advert but I've seen a reference to Torquay United once being advertised as "for sale" in a national newspaper. The club wasn't specifically named but the announcement apparently read along the lines of "£200,000 o.n.o; apply to PO Box...."
I'm led to believe this was around 1983 or 1984 and, indeed, a certain Mr Webb of London may have answered the advert. Is this a figment of my imagination, an urban myth or something approximating to reality?
