Does anybody know the history of football on Daddyhole Plain? Did it cease with the 1914-1918 war or did it continue afterwards. I know more about before 1914 than I know about after 1918. Daddyhole Plain was the original base for Torquay Athletic - formed in 1876. They held athletics meetings there and also played (rugby) football there - although "in house" games rather than against other clubs. As far as I can tell, when they started playing against other clubs in 1877/78 they played home games on Paignton Green until they adopted Plainmoor as home for the 1881/82 season. Just reading an old 1925 handbook. Interestingly states they secured the use of their own ground in Manor road in 1880 where football and other sports were already being staged. However the following year another change was forced on the club with a move into a field in Warbro Road which is now better known as Plainmoor. More to the point am i the only one that loves this seasons bland pale kit ? Your thoughts on it Jon ?

Yes I have read that handbook and have reconciled most of the early years to what really happened. More reliable than Mr Luscombe, but a bit out on a few points. Have not been able to find any mention of Tics at Manor Road. They were at Plainmoor for the start of the 1881/82 season www.torquayfans.boards.net/thread/8787/first-football-plainmoor-1881-recand were still at Paignton Green in November / December 1880 - so any stay at Manor Road must have been brief. I know that Torquay YMCA played Plymouth Argyle in a field on the opposite side of Warbro Road from Plainmoor (where Devons Road is now?) on Boxing Day 1892. Would this be the same field - bordering Manor Road on one side and Warboro Road on another? torquayfans.boards.net/thread/8348The original Torquay Steeplechases (prior to Petitor) also took place somewhere around this area. Cutting re Paignton Green 1880:

That sounds about right, it says the ground at Manor Road was in the Cary Park area, so sounds like the correct side. I would have thought this should show on an early map. It was a brief stay tho and it dosnt say why they were forced to move to the field in Warbro Road.
