The last game. 1 more point to cap the season off. We can't really afford to lose this, just in case
However, our recent record against Bristol Rovers suggests a defeat is unlikely. Though we lost 3-2 at the Mem earlier this season, it is 1 of only 4 league defeats to the Pirates in the 21st century. The others came on New Year's Day 2007, when a late Andy Sandell goal gave Rovers a 1-0 win at the Mem, in August 2005 with their last win at Plainmoor, with late goals from Junior Agogo and Richard Walker giving them a dramatic 3-2 win, and in August 2001, with another 1-0 defeat for Torquay at the Mem courtesy of another late goal, this time from Steve Foster
Overall, Rovers lead 34-22 in wins, with 17 draw. But that's to be expected as they are the bigger club, and most of these defeats for us came many years ago - we were not in the same division between 1971-72 and 2001-02. 5 of those Rovers win came in cup competitions, while only 2 of Torquay's wins came outside the league, making the league record 29-20
I guess we'd be looking for a result like that on 28th March 1932, when Torquay won 8-1 at home

The Player of the Season announcement is AFTER the match www.torquayunited.com/news/article/p.o.t.s-announcement-790928.aspxAlso the referee for the game is the infamous Darren Deadman. Our record with him in charge is W1 D1 L6, including 4 defeats in a row - the Crawley FA Cup game, the Old Trafford play-off final, the 4-1 defeat at home to Southend in 2011, and the 1-0 defeat at Barnet earlier this season

Not our favourite ref but surely we are due to get something from him this time?
Looking at previous seasons and how this one has gone, good luck in keeping the crowd off but maybe the enhanced police presence with it being a "local derby" will be more of a deterrent?

A brave decision to decide that immediately after the final game of the season is the best time to make the Player of the Season presentation. I can't help wondering whether it might prove to be foolhardy.
Although there will be no shortage of police and stewards in attendance (there had better be considering the ratcheting up of the ticket price) I could understand if some Rovers supporters fancied patting their players on the back after a tough season that was very fraught in the early stages.
Should we stay up I'd imagine plenty of the younger Popsiders will want to run on and celibrate as well. With the pitch needing to undergo extensive work over the summer then it's probably as good a time as any to let a few hundred youngsters run around on it.
Of course players need to focus on the match, but I can't see why the player of the season can't collect his award just before he leaves the pitch after his pre match warm up. Getting a round of applause ought to boost his confidence going into the match rather than have any adverse effects, and in return all we ask is that he gives us a wave and holds the trophy up on his way to the dressing rooms.
Should the POTY presentation descend into a shambles, or fail to take place at all, I think we should ask ourselves whether unrealistic scheduling by the club wasn't as much to blame as over-enthusiastic young fans.
Worse still perhaps would be if the whole thing falls flat as people are making for the exits rather than staying on for the presentation. With a big crowd forecast, many will already have been inside Plainmoor for the best part of 3 hours. I've certainly got my reservations as to whether this will prove to be the wisest of decisions.

Fair points Alpine Joe. I listened to the Morecambe presentations for a while last week too after the game to a reducing crowd.... On balance the 'message' this gives is most important for me...... Saturday is ALL about focus, starting well, then focus and starting well again. We need to get ourselves, finally, out of this mess.... Not rely on anyone else. Nothing else matters...... By comparison, how important is a presentation?

I think they may be thinking back to that situation a few years ago when they presented before the match and we then played as if still in a party mood, promptly losing (was it the promotion year, 2003-04?). But some fair points - if in the extremely unlikely event that we do go down, what do they do?

I was at the game James. 1-1 v Kidderminster..2004..we thought we had blown it.... Ten minutes of announcements and photos with David Graham etc set the wrong tone before the game...although Southend away 2-1 was fun the next week..... Concentrate, get a good start, then concentrate again. This game on Saturday is too important.........I agree with Knill.

Dreamt last night that we won 4-3 and rovers had a player sent off after two minutes!!! I've never been psychic but who knows?! I think we will be ok on Saturday, a draw probably a likely result. My money on d&r to go down with the shots...

When I was a young un of about 10 or 11 and living in the North in the mid eighties, I started to adopt Torquay United as a second team. The reason was because they finished bottom of the league two years running, and for some reason that struck a chord with me.
Now all these years later we have yet another crucial survival game, I can't wait I relish it. If I prayed, or was not agnostic I would probably be begging a God for survival..... however I am pretty confident we will win and be comfortable by at least half time.
These days my boy who is three loves the Yellow Army, and tomorrow he will see what supporting Torquay United will usually be about. I couldn't cope if we went down again, last time I cried like a girl. I hope my boy never has to go through that, though at three it is highly likely one day he will!!!!
COME ON YOU YELLOWS!!!!
As a side issue, what a good job Rotherham didn't finish bottom of the league twice in the mid eighties...... I would have hated living there.

jj - good to hear from you again! You picked one heck of a game to come back!
dog - it was the season after those two and the greatest of escapes that got me interested in the club- anyone like to volunteer to run at a police dog if we are losing by the odd goal?

A view shared by me me at the time Joe. It could well have descended into utter chaos but thankfully, and by good luck rather than judgement, the only problem was with Deano's microphone. On hearing the final whistle it was obvious that Darren Deadman had not been nominated for ref of the year

After watching the highlights I thought their penalty was harsh and we had a couple of better shouts. Their winger was very lucky not to get a second yellow and maybe another ref would have seen Bristol 's dream come true- not everyone has their dreams thwarted by a dead man, haunted maybe! Quite comical to see him blow the full time whistle as he ran for the tunnel and probably chose to based on where and not when play was!
