Look at all that hair! Don't really remember the guy in question, but some of those names bring back great memories.

Hi supergulls, many thanks for sharing this picture with us, I have redone the picture to make it easier to view and will move this thread into our history room.

My friend sent me this picture from the 74-75 season, his dad used to play for Torquay and was transferred from Arsenal. His name was Jim de Garis does anybody remember him ? Sorry for not replying to this earlier. I'm not sure if I saw Jim play for us or not. He only played four games at Plainmoor (nine in total) after signing for us towards the end of the 1973/74 season. I was only a nipper and at that time an occasional rather than regular visitor to Plainmoor. The famous Mr_W's specialist subject on mastermind was "Bearded footballers of the 70s" and I know he was a big fan of Jim's facial shrubbery so he may be able to share some memories - if he survived the over-indulgence of the end-of-season curry night. Jim did indeed start out at Arsenal and actually played in the side that won the FA Youth Cup in 1971. Another future Torquay player Graham Horn was in goal for Arsenal - Graham sadly passed away last year. Lined up against Graham and Jim in the Cardiff team was future Torquay player and manager John Impey. Jim didn't move direct from Arsenal to Torquay - he went via Bournemouth. We signed him in a swap deal with Gareth Jones - who had seen local boy Steve Morrall push ahead of him in the promising young winger stakes.

Whatever happened to David Hookway, the goalkeeper in this photo?

I did see de Garis play: in the final two home games of the 73/74 season at home to Chester ( torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/12895/chester-20-04-74) and Peterborough ( torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/12896/peterborough-united-07-05-74). There is a certain irony that he is featured in the 1974/75 team photo but didn't play a single first team game that season, failing to break the Harrison/Stocks/Boulton stranglehold on the two centre-back positions. Even Ray Ellison appeared to take the number 5 shirt on a couple of occasions and he certainly wasn't a central defender! Perhaps injury ended his Gulls career, I can't find much more info on the internet.
