Just read about Cheltenham manager Martin Allen telling Russell he can leave. Unfortunatley, it is unlikely he will return here and Port Vale seem already set to sign him. Have to say though, im shocked that Allen does'nt want him there, under their last manager he seemed to be considered one of the key players in the team and I really think it's a mistake to let him go.
Would anyone not want him back here though, if we could have him?
Considering the form of Wroe and Hargreaves he may even struggle to get into our team.
Having said this, i'd have him back in a second if we could. Don't think its likely though.

A high quality player a few years back. Personally I wouldn't want to see him back at Torquay. For all his undoubted ability I wouldn't want a poor 2nd spell at the club to tarnish the opinion I formed of him during his previous spell.

Look what happened to David Graham when he came back, Hero to Zero.

Although Alex Russell is an outstanding player, and probably one of the best players I've seen in a Torquay shirt, I'd have to agree, a return now is not an option. I'd have loved to have seen him back at the start of the season and welcomed him with open arms alongside Hargreaves, but with the current form, numerous options in midfield and style of play, I believe his return would have a negative effect. Saying that, if he's available at the end of the season, think he'd be a great addition to our League 2 squad!

Anyone think that he might come back here as a player is very, very optimistic! I reckon that Aggy would be a different prospect to to a troubled David Graham, tufc01, but I take your point. We had 4 great seasons from Aggy - but times move-on for both parties.
I'm happy enough with Hargreaves and (for the most part as of late - although I missed the Woking match!) Nicky Wroe has started to really up his game. Thompson or Brough (I'll be amazed if he doesn't get a start in the next week or two - Hargreaves, Wroe and Buckle have been talking him up recently) could fill the middle spot should there be any short-term injuries.
Hope he does well wherever he goes,

Allen is a p rick and plays rubbish football! He wants his teams to bully teams off the pitch and a cultured player like Russell would never fit in there. he still has a career in the league but I'd love him back.

I would love him back, though I cant see it happening.
The reason I would like him back is because I feel that with his passing we can score a lot more goals and he will be able to work alongside Hargreaves and with Thompson to feed Sills the balls he needs to score and I think he would be able to play regular football and I am going to say yes I would like him back.

Have to say I totally agree with Stuartb about Martin Allen. Last season Russell went there on loan along with one or two others from Bristol City and immediatley Cheltenham went on a run and surived. He also, by the way, has 6 assists to his name so far this season and he's only played about 7 or 8 games. I don't like to badmouth our own players but if it was a choice between Russell or Brough at the club there would clearley only be one winner. Though I dont think it's at all likely that he will return he would be absolute quality in this division. It would then be a case of him and Greavsie with Wroe or Thompson playing just infront.
Still though, im sure he'll find a club in the league that recognise his talent.

Chris while I do not think we would ever see Alex here again, I can't really agree with your views on this. I really think that the class he has would still grace this league and I do not think he would tarnish our views we have on him. D.G was a different case, he was class when we got him to play in the end, but we all know his off the field problems and what we saw on his return to us was the result of those problems.

Plus Graham flourished with Russell in the midfield. That's no coincidence.
