Just been announced. New manager will be revealed tomorrow (that rules ex-player Ling out, then) - Phil Brown is apparently the name doing the rounds He will get the chance to lead the team out at Wembley in the JP Trophy Final but somehow that seems a bit hollow www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21918727

Actually given that the appointment of Brown was made straight away, clearly this has been planned so it has almost certainly been thought through. I can't believe it's taken him this long to get a job. He's a very good manager

I've been asked to explain my opinion on Phil Brown
The job he did at Hull was remarkable, not only to get them promoted into the Premier League but to keep them there. And there was a good chance he would have kept them there for another season before his dismissal - they were above the relegation zone at the time he was sacked, and it was Iain Dowie who took them down. After that, he nearly kept Preston in the Championship after he arrived there, and only (unfairly) got the boot when Ridsdale arrived
Sturrock, on the other hand, hasn't got the job done. Though they supposedly don't have any money, they still have a team you would expect to be challenging for promotion, especially considering the talent in the squad (as we witnessed at Plainmoor earlier this season) and how they did last year. But at the moment they look like failing to get into the play-offs, which is a major disappointment for them. Now is the right time to change manager so that Brown can get a good look at the squad, make decisions on who to retain, and work out some targets for the summer. It seems harsh at first glance but thinking about it, it makes sense - he has probably taken them as far as he can
Also, I'd add that Sturrock's record in management has been very hit and miss. He did a great job at Argyle the first time around but has struggled in a few jobs since then - I'm thinking of Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and his second stint at Plymouth in particular, which were all very disappointing. He's evidently a good manager but I believe Phil Brown to be one of the most underrated managers of recent years, and I think Southend need a fresh approach. It may not be the sort of thing we would do but maybe that's why Southend have been in the Championship in recent years and we haven't

James' assessment of Phil Brown's managerial abilities may well be correct. I've certainly not followed his career too closely, but do think the occasion some years back when he stopped his players going to the dressing room at half time lost him a certain amount of credibility and respect within the game. The news that Sturrock had accepted the opportunity to lead Southend out at Wembley has caused a bit of discussion during the week with many speculating that such a move would clash badly with the 'Look At Me' side of Brown's personality. Reading the Express & Echo this afternoon, I noticed that Exeter City's Danny Coles didn't rate Sturrock's chances too highly given his first hand knowledge of working with Brown: "I was surprised to hear one of my former bosses, Phil Brown, had got the manager's job at Roots Hall and even more surprised to hear outgoing boss Paul Sturrock say he had been invited to take charge again for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final at Wembley on April 7. While I understand the logic of allowing the man who took the Shrimpers to the final to have one last hurrah, it's a bit of a weird one and, frankly, I just can't see it happening. Quite apart from anything else, Brown adores the limelight and, having seen precious little of it in recent years, I'd be amazed if the perma-tanned one were to let an opportunity like this slip through his hands". Perma Brown
I therefore had to laugh when an hour ago I looked at the BBC's football headlines and learned that Sturrock would be watching the match with the fans, while surprise surprise.....a Mr.Phil Brown will be proudly strutting out onto the Wembley turf at the front of the Southend team. Look At Him

Seems quite a character does Danny Coles. I take it that's a regular column of his. Like it. Very Hargreavesesque.

Funny, I used to get jibes about Ling being permatanned from a friend of mine, who is a big Cambridge fan
