Stumbled across this the other day: Can anyone name the artist and either of the mascots in the picture?

The artist Mervyn Scoble , signature bottom right of full picture, studied at South Devon College of Art. He is now listed as Canadian, having moved there in the mid 20th Century. It's a charming picture, I wonder where the original is?

Yes, TUFC's most famous webmaster (with apologies to other aspirants) Mervo used to be an Exeter City mascot! Some evocative memories and another great picture here: Mervo the mascotI believe that Mervo's dad was the driving force behind the Exmouth Grecians - rallying a phenomenal amount of support and fundraising from the area. I can't remember the details, but I think ECFC did something to seriously p Mr Scoble senior off. Their loss was our gain. I wouldn't have had a clue who the TUFC mascot was until Merse came up with the name Haydyn Morgan and I am sure he is right - here is Haydyn shaking hands with the great John Charles in 1955:

Someone wanted to insult me I guess and listed me as belonging to a cultural abyss of astronomic proportions. Not to mention a footballing void. The painting is in my attic studio in a portfolio.

Right on the issue of ECFC angering my father. He raised mega pounds for the club and the Exmouth branch of the Grecians, which he formed, had more members than the parent group. I still have the correspondence between my father and club. Mike Bateson sent me an Exeter programme for a game v Torquay around 2000 and my father was quoted in a history archive. I remember Dad yelling out to the players after a particularly dire performance "Eighteen quid a week...they're not worth five!" Merse is right on Haydn Morgan being mascot. I used to got to reserve games with his Dad in the 60s. Last I saw Haydn was in the 70s when he worked in a car dealers in Newton near the station. Merse is usually right about stuff like that but he did mistakenly accuse my father of being a referee.

Great to hear from you Mervo! Do they give you a bus pass in Canada when you get to 65??? Actually it has the effect of knocking my handicap down just a little. They probably do but since Weirdtown has no buses and Toronto public transit pretty useless I use my almost last century car.

Fleur tells me that Haydn has visited the museum exhibition and lent a picture which is now on display!
