If anybody hasn't seen/read todays Herald Express, you wouldn't know that from after todays match, we are playing 11 games in 33 days - that averages a game every 3 days! Thats crazy in my opinion! Competing in 5 tournaments is just too much in my opinion, and I hope Buckle decides to play the players like Brough and the youngsters in the Devon Bowl, The Setanta Shield, at least. It's a hectic schedule now going through untill the start of January, in my opinion. If we can come out of this with a full strength squad and still be top of the league...wow!

Absolute crazy in my view nick and the main reason I felt we should have just put out the weakest team, in our Setanta Shield game against Weymouth.
Its all very well saying we need to keep our winning run going, but I wonder if after this spell of games, we found we had dropped someway down the table, how many would start changing their viewpoints, on the cups that really do not have much value.

Agreed Dave. On one occasion, we have a BSP game away at Eastbourne on Dec 9th, then a Devon Bowl game at Cullompton Rangers on the 10th! Absolutely crazy!

I think Buckle mentioned that when (if) this winning run ends, we will see a lot more of the "fringe" players and youth players being used for the "lesser" competitions!

I saw it and had to double check it wasn't April 1st. Agree a weak team needs to be put out in the Sultana Shield and the Devon Bowl.

Only thing re: Setanta Shield, there is prize money for it. Didn't we get £4,000 for beating Weymouth? Given the gates being down, everything helps.

Only thing re: Setanta Shield, there is prize money for it. Didn't we get £4,000 for beating Weymouth? Given the gates being down, everything helps. But what is the real prize for going up? not sure of figures, so I hope someone will help me out here, but to get back to div2 will be worth far more than £4.000. Firstly there would be the prize money going up as companions, or the even richer money that would be earned playing and winning the play off final. Then add on the money you would get next season from the FA. I'm sure the normal payment is more than £100,000, but we would only get half of that in our first season back in div2.Then add the money from bigger gates as we would win back many stay aways, plus the much larger away fans who would be coming to Plainmoor and that £4,000, is looking like chicken feed. I see no reason why we would not get gates of 3000, if we were in div2 next season, that must be worth an extra £14,000, per every home game, that is why I think we should only concern ourselves, with winning the league and getting as far as we can, in the only cup that could earn the club money and that is the FA Cup. Playing this many games in such a short time, could well have a major impact on our league position, I know what I would rather do if I was the manager and that is make sure my team loses the matches in the Mickey mouse cups, so as to win what is most important to the fans and the club.

I'm sure the normal payment is more than £100,000, but we would only get half of that in our first season back in div2 I've seen you make this point before Dave. Is that really true? Seems a bit unfair to me, not exactly a level playing field! Promoted teams would normally have to up their spending to hope to compete in a higher division so where is the logic in giving them less money?

yes Jerry I believe it is and I was told that by many of my customers in Exeter, when I talked with them at the end of last season when they went up.
I think I'll try and find out for sure, but I see not reason why they would have got it wrong. It certainly does not seem fair and I have no idea why the FA would do this, as you say the club going up would need the same money to be able to compete on a level playing field.

Yes, I'm sure that I have read somewhere that the league payout is reduced for the first year as well. Maybe it is split with the relegated club as part of their parachute payment?
In response to the thread title, yes, very tough but the squad is a lot stronger than last year and if the likes of Carlisle, Dsane, Poke and Robertson are shortly due to return from injury, this will reduce the pressure, not to mention the likes of Green, Ellis, Brough and Adams who must be desperate for a game and even Benyon and Stevens haven't played that much this year! That doesn't include the youth players.
Hopefully Buckle can shuffle his pack so even a weakened squad can go forward in competitions like the Setanta Shield a la Aldershot last year.

That is correct, it was part of the "bargaining" that the Football League extracted from the Conference when the second promotion place was agreed to.
