Since pessimism seems to be the order of the day at the moment here are some snippets culled today from supporters' forums belonging to other teams named United, and referring to the weekend's games. Can you guess which Uniteds from the clues?
Some editing has been done to stop it from being too easy.
nb This quiz is not for people from Torbay because they should be going to the match this evening against Exeter and not sat at home messing about on the internet.
Number 1
That really was dire, get a lad in who is scoring for fun coming from the middle & play him out of position, play A who is out of position anywhere on a football field, have a no shoot policy & a tactic of pass it sideways or put in a shit cross for the starved forwards. Throw in the white towel by putting on B, to be too slow to get a shot off & handball his only other chance, farcical substitution but he fitted in well by being totally useless.
Oh dear oh dear oh dear.
Number 2
Truly atrocious…but let’s be honest, is that hugely different from anything we have seen so far this season? Unfortunately, I am beginning to consider not watching us again while X and Y are in charge. The strength, and depth of feeling I have towards them is so strong, and has been so since minute 1, and I have never said that about any of our previous managers. X’ post match interview referring to the first 15 minutes, “We passed it, we moved the ball around, we got crosses in.” No we didn’t. “We had lots of possession.” No we didn’t.
We are a long ball team filled with individuals who seem scared witless to adapt their own style of play due to a fear of being reprimanded by those on the touchline. This was clear when A rolled the ball out to B, only to be told by X and Y that it had to go long, and forward at the first opportunity.
When in possession (which is rare) we are so abundantly short of ideas that it is embarrassing. The first option is to go long, as is the second option…and the third. Why have players like Z in the team if you are not going to play a style and pattern of play that maximises his abilities?
Number 3
Sick to the core of this shit.
I have never felt so detached from my club. I can take it or leave it now never thought I would feel that way about United.
Number 4
As for the game, I can't be bothered to say much other than we were going OK and seemed to be having the better of it until the "goal" that wasn't given. As soon as that happened, everything seemed to go to pot. Almost immediately, (opponents) broke down their right through our porous midfield and scored.
A decent day out, and nice to be back in the city where I went to uni, but that was a pretty pathetic performance against fellow promotion contenders.
Number 5
Very dull, disappointing and lacklustre game. We seriously need to drop X because he doesn't offer anything whatsoever apart from his ''work-rate'', ''defensive ability'' and ''stamina''. Lack of pace and lack of genuine technical ability. Y was poor in the first-half but improved somewhat in the second but I still want him sold/benched by the end of January, he's still a liability IMO with his slowness, awful passing ability and general ponderousness.
Number 6
I just don’t think we have the squad to cope with injuries and that has shown with the larger inconsistencies in performance. The difference is that some of our squad players can have good games but not as regular as the better players, while large changes on the team sheet each week also break the ebb and flow of the team. When we have played poor we have still been difficult to beat but that has changed with many defenders now being out injured. The reality is that we always had a squad that was destined for a relegation scrap or a bit higher and it was only our easy start plus great organisation by the manager that has seen us over-achieve.
Number 7
Relegation has been staring us in the face for 5 weeks because we are not scoring goals, we look totally disorganised, the management team look incapable of doing anything, the fans have disappeared and I could go on.
Over the last few months everything that people like Big X, Y, Z to name but three fought for and achieved with no resources has been frittered away.
Relegation would be a disaster and those of us who have supported United for many years can remember the bad times 25 years or so ago and how long it took to get back.
Number 8
No posts cus the game wasnt worth writing about. Really poor game of football. We did play well for about 15 mins in second half. Doubt (opponents) will get very far if they play like that against better teams who can defend properly.
And finally,
the future holds grief and more grief i am afraid
it has become a real struggle going to matches and is the first season ever where i have decided that i wil not go to a match on a saturday. whether this becomes the norm we will see
the team is rotten. whether it is lack of confidence i dont know. i cant believe that we have players who put on the top and do not put the effort in. we seem to start ok then when the opposition scores we just lose it mentally
nothing more to say....kennyb
