Sometimes you can read a story in the paper, or hear about on the news and it can end up making you think, is it time something was done about it. Today I listened to a very moving story from a very brave lady who recently lost her husband and now has to bring their two children aged eight and five up on her own. I say lost but I really mean murdered and as a result of the circumstances he ended up getting killed, she has launched a campaign that is gathering a lot of support.
The family lived in Preston and her husband was in a London nightclub for a corporate event that was an invite only do. He was up at the bar when a man walked towards the bar, it was busy and packed and there was some pushing etc going on. Its not know just what happened but the two men had words and then the one who had walked up to the bar grabbed the other mans bottle of drink off him. The bottle some how got broke and the man then plunged the broken bottle into the neck of this ladies husband and he died from his injuries four days later. The killer has been jailed after being found guilty of murder.
The campaign she has started is to try and get all glass out of pubs and clubs and have them replaced with plastic, something that has been campaigned for in the past. I myself do not drink and have no problems with those who do. We all work hard and should be free to enjoy what ever we like and if you like having a pint etc, then good on you.
Everything in life is fine in moderation, it’s when it’s taken to excess, it starts becoming a problem. Being a non drinker and only because I don’t like the taste of it and when I did get drunk only the once, I was sick and when I laid down the room was going around and around, I do not understand why people like getting drunk.
We have all heard people say, I’m looking forward to Friday so I can get as drunk as a fart. As it was not a nice experience for me, I struggle to see what can be so attractive in getting drunk, can anyone tell me?
I do not see a problem with people getting drunk, some become so funny and are as harmless as they come and are more likely to want to kiss you than cause you any harm. But that is not always the case and some can become very dangerous people indeed. We have all been in a pub where we bumped into someone and said sorry and that person then say that’s OK. We might have all been in a pub when the same thing happened and as the bloke was full of drink, took the incident as a good enough excuse to knock your block off.
We have all seem how brave some can become once they are full of drink and think they are big enough to take the whole world on in a fight it need be. This is the side of drinking I really dislike and it’s the time when some innocent people really can get badly hurt.
I think it’s the most cowardly act in the world to pick up a glass or a bottle in a pub and smash it into someone’s face, how could anyone want to hurt someone else so badly? It goes on every weekend in pubs up and down the country and we have all seen pictures of the victims in local and national newspapers.
It’s something that could happen to anyone of us, all that needs to happen is be in the wrong bar and the wrong time with some drunken idiot in there as well, who has no regard for his fellow human beings. You might get lucky and end up with only 30 stitches having to be put into your face; you might be very unlucky and end up dead.
I talked on here a little while ago about how some people have been killed by just one punch from someone who was drunk. In most cases it’s the fall to the ground after the punch was delivered, that caused the person to die. Unless you have lighting reactions, you might not be able to get out of the way of a punch coming your way, but you could be spared a serious injury, if the drunk was unable to stick a broken glass in your face.
Drink is a big problem in this country, but I’m against minimum pricing as most people drink sensibly and those on lower wages etc who deserve a drink after a hard days work, should not be priced out of doing so. People wrongly believe drink will only damage their liver, WRONG, I can take you to a place in Paignton and introduce to a a lady who is only fifty years old, suffering serious brain damage caused by drinking.
The real problem I have with making every drinker drink out of plastics cups is it’s not fair on all those who can handle their drink and are never ever going to want to glass anybody. I remember how I felt when we had our tops taken off the bottle of pop we bought inside of Plainmoor. Yes is some ground a million miles away from Plainmoor, some stupid fan put a coin inside a bottle top and threw it at a player. Very dangerous and the player could have had his eye taken out and I can understand the reasons some clubs wanted to remove bottle tops.
So because of the mindless one or two, everyone ended up being treated more like children (well that’s how it felt) as far as I was concerned I still had the bottle to throw if I really wanted to throw anything (not that I would due the price it costs lol) Anyway anyone could take in an old mobile phone and throw it, that really could hurt someone badly if it hit them.
I suppose it comes down to risk factors in the end, was there really much chance of a fan inside plainmoor throwing is bottle top at a player? The club in the end decide the risk was so very low they started letting fans keep their bottle tops.
How high are the risks of being glassed in a pub or club? Far higher I would say than the risk of that bottle top being thrown at a player. But is it high enough to say its time to stop having glass in every single pub and nightclub?
So what do you think?
