I may not have quite so much time on my hands over the next few weeks so it was good to take advantage of free football on Tuesday afternoon. They still have a reserve league in the north of England and Rotherham United were playing Mansfield Town at Parkgate.
Parkgate FC - of the Northern Counties East League (step 5) - play a couple of miles out of town in Rawmarsh at the Roundwood Sports Complex. This consists of Parkgate's own pitch, the adjacent Rotherham United training centre, a bowls lawn and pavilion/bar/administrative block. There's also a neighbouring golf course. The whole place overlooks the still heavily-industrialised Don Valley.
The game was played on Parkgate's ground rather than one of the training pitches. It's a neat, if fairly basic set-up, with most of the facilities behind the goal at the sports pavilion end. There's a rather fetching hedge all along one touchline, the other side of which is the training centre.
I thought it was a decent competitive game and it ended 1-1. You'll see from the team sheet that Rotherham fielded a relatively strong side. There was a reasonable crowd that would have been slightly bigger than usual because of half-term. A few "hoppers" in attendance too who were probably of the type who watch 200+ games a season; I can't believe they hadn't been to Parkgate before. And, whoever they were, they were happy to buy up the 20p team sheet in batches of four, five and six. What they'll do with them is anybody's business.
