I've been lucky recently in being offered lifts to Newcastle's Europa League games against Bordeaux and. Brugge. With tickets at £15 a throw - and friends in the north east - it's been too good to decline.
And, on both occasions, we've been able to take in a Northern League game on the Saturday. This time it was Bedlington Terriers v Penrith.
Bedlington is a small town about a dozen miles north of Newcastle. The football team is one of the strongest in the step 5 Northern League but, this year anyway, look destined for third place at best as Darlington and Spennymoor slug it out for the title. Bedlington have had moments of glory: several successive championships; Wembley in the Vase; a mullering of Colchester in the FA Cup.
More recently there's the intriguing tale of an American billionaire discovering ancestors from Bedlington and deciding to sponsor the club. Bizarrely he decided to give the Terriers a swish new electronic scoreboard. You'll see that below together with a more traditional team sheet which includes several interesting names.
For the record, Bedlington beat Penrith 3-1.
