So players to date are. Danny Stevens Chris Hargreaves Steve Woods Steve Adams Lee Hodges Lee Mansell Tyrone Thompson Wayne Carlisle Micheal Brough Kevin Nicholson Chris Tod Mark Ellis Nicky Wroe Tim Sills Matt Green Roscoe Dsane Elliot Benyon Raiff Gwinnett
Forgetting about the keeper position, until it is sorted out. What would be your starting 11, in what positions and what formation should they play.

I think we have the ideal players now to play a far more disciplined version of 4-4-2.....
.........................................N E Keeper........................................... Mansell......................Todd.................Brough......................Nicholson Thompson..................Wroe.................Hodges.........................Carlisle .................................Green................Sills.....................................
Subs: NE Other Keeper, Ellis, Dsane, Hargreaves, Stevens
Thompson provides a lot more defensive cover than Stevens ever could on the right, but is also an excellent player going forward. The only change I could see, depending on the opponent, would be Hodges taking over from Carlisle on the left with Hargreaves or Adams in the middle alongside Wroe. Both Carlisle and Thompson have also played left and right during their career, and I like to have that versatility as part of my wide midfielders, as you could see with David Silva and Iniesta (then later Cazorla) for Spain last night.

That is the team and formation, I would have picked and I see no reason why, not only should it be able to produce football, that is pleasing to the eye, but more importantly get the results needed. It does all depend on Mr Buckle playing players in their best position, something that has not always happened. It really does look such a good team on paper, lets hope they gel quickly and deliver what we think they should be capable of.

Due to the quality players we have signed, I'm having a real problem trying to work out what the starting eleven will be. I'm suprised you are leaving Hargreaves out of the line up and think he will be a starter but I just can't see who is going to miss out. What a good problem to have, with real quality on the bench. I am also wondering if we will change formation to 4-3-3, along the same lines as Exeter last season with it really being an attacking 4-5-1. There's so much potential and I can't wait for pre season so we can all have a look at the new players.

I am also wondering if we will change formation to 4-3-3, along the same lines as Exeter last season with it really being an attacking 4-5-1. Could that be the key to a longer lasting challenge this season? Not in my opinion. Rigidity, is commendable as a strength whilst winning; but is a liability when the system is "rumbled" and after all, what is there to rumble about 4-4-2 ? There is the school of thought that over simplification is the better way for English players; so that thought demanding systems that incorporate inter positional switching, zonal marking, and alternating "wingers" should be avoided at all costs. You see, we can all be smart arses at the expense of practicality; so all I'll be looking for is the traditional "strength through the middle" of a rock solid goalkeeper, centre half and centre forward.............and we haven't even got the first one yet! It doesn't matter who you have in front of him, if your keeper's going to "go shopping" when you change him for a game; you're screwed. If the back four lose confidence in the guy behind them, they're screwed. If the midfield lose confidence in the defence, they're screwed and if the strikers..................... You see what I mean, the first rule of management isn't systems at all, it's psychology and plain old organisation..............and a greater degree of professionalism and reliability from the key positions starting with the goalkeeper that we still haven't got yet! I think Rayner has got a bit if a reputation amongst managers for unreliability and inconsistency, and that wasn't helped by last season's events; and if so; it only goes to prove that you can't even give away a dodgy keeper. Until I see one of our keepers unloaded, or despatched on a season long loan; I don't confidently expect to see the arrival of a a competent replacement.

At our level, I would normally agree with you Merse but Exeter were pretty effective with the 4-3-3 formation last season as used by Man Utd.
It took them a while to get going however but they did at least prove that it can be used alongside a traditional 4-4-2.
I really do think that the players we have signed would allow us to play a 4-3-3 formation with more scope for interchanging positions within a game. Total football??
It all depends on Paul Buckle though and he certainly didn't give any hints that he was anything but a 4-4-2 man last year.

The secret is to have the team be able to play at least two different formations. Depending on what the opposition play, we should be able to change our formation to suit.
We all agree it was our main problem last season, not having a plan B, but I'm sure that was a very important lesson the Mr Buckle has Learned.
