I don't reckon it has to be, and by most accounts Ling seems to be a reasonable and approachable guy, and if the players wanted him to be less open with the media I don't think he'd reject that suggestion out of hand.
But there's a right way to do it,and the players should convey their feelings through a senior professional, ideally their Captain, and the pros and cons of Lingy's approach to the media could be thrashed out. I'm sure he's far less of a 'my way or the highway' man than his predecessor.
Having said that I'd caution against paying too much heed to Junior Brucie's claims that Ling's continued approach will "just piss the players off even more". My guess is that Junior Brucie was looking for something new to hit Ling about the head with, and (not for the first time) thought his computer football management game had provided it. In fact we could ask if the players are pissed off at all by these media 'rants' that are being criticised ? If they are, then it seems odd in the extreme that the team captain would devote his column in Tuesday nights programme (v Aldershot) to what can surely only be interpreted as an endorsement of Ling's current approach:
'We are always aware of what the manager says to the media and he is very honest in his opinions. We all take it on board because he will say the same to us. Honesty from a manager is hugely important to players because that's all you can ask for, and that's what we've had from the gaffer from day one'.
Now of course this could be code for "the players are heartily sick of your ranting to the media and we're thoroughly pissed off by it" - but if it is I reckon Mansell has disguised it far too well for Lingy (or me) to pick up on.
IF Ling's style p***es players off then TOUGH .
