link - there has finally been a national survey to try and settle this TFF debate and I am very sorry to say that the Cornish way with jam first has come on top! However, looks like the further north you go, the more popular the Cornish method is with the South West results no doubt skewered by a Cornish bias! Also, a minority view is not necessarily wrong!

Never in doubt!! “Take a spoonful of jam and spread, then spread the clotted cream on top - better to spread the jam first - as it allows more control to spread the cream over the jam.”

What the hell is the point of asking Northerners how to eat a cream tea? They would have mushy peas and gravy on their scones if you gave them half the chance. I am sure we have had this discussion with regards to music but, as Rob says, never confuse "most popular" with "best". Link to a decent article from the Guardian below. It correctly says what is the Devon way and what is the Cornish way - whilst acknowledging that the odd Devonian poltroon might use the Cornish method and vice versa. It correctly concludes that the Devon way is best whilst ridiculing such daft notions as using butter and sticking the two halves of the scone back together so that the cream and jam ooze out. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2014/jun/12/how-to-eat-cream-tea-scones-jam

At the risk of sounding strange, I have to say I have always leant towards the jam on first, topped off with cream. Purely because I find the flavour of the cream, being delicate, somewhat overpowered when jam is splatted on top of it....

Sorry, I think you are not putting enough cream on, think about 1cm of really thick clotted cream followed by a teaspoonful of jam spread over it. Mind you, I was brought up to believe that an egg-cupful of clotted cream would cure a sore throat. And that if the cream didn't fall off the spoon you didn't have enough on the spoon.

Cream is minging, jam is average at best, tea is just rank and scones are ridiculously boring! This is nearly as daft a subject as the drivers vs cyclist debate! Pies are worthy of discussion though!

Good News! There has finally been some serious scientific research into this contentious subject and I am pleased to see that the "Devon" way has clearly come out on top using a 4-3-3 formation (scone-cream-jam ratio). Argument over! link

Sadly I discussed this with my Telford work colleagues who cannot understand how cream would go on first. I feel distraught on behalf of everyone; not that i've ever had one.
