The team must be knackered having played 120 minutes with 10 men (and a cardboard cut-out on the left with number 11 on its back)

More than one card board cut out me thinks. Technically inept we simply don't know how to retain possession but cannot fault the effort and stubbornness , though that's never going to be enough at the highest level. Hodgson did the best with what he had at his disposal and we at least performed like a team unlike the French. Mercifully it saves us from further embarrassment next week against the German machine.

"England cannot win the World Cup" Alan Shearer states in this BBC article. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18619259How right he is. After watching Portugal and Spain play at full throttle for 120 minutes with little sign of exhaustion I have also come to the conclusion that many of the England squad were not even fit to play. Rooney, just one example looked red faced and completely blown out at 70 minutes. We need a fitter younger squad with potential to progress. We had to many stop gap players in the squad for this tournament the likes of Parker, Johnson, Young and Milner are run of the mill Premiership players unable to step up to the mark,. Hodgson Im sure knows what's required and we do have good young players waiting in the wings in Wilshire and Walker. Sad to say but 25 years ago we were saying the same and nothing has changed. The grass roots culture of the English game needs an major overhaul with the emphasis on promoting technical ability. Problem is we are so far behind it will take years to get close to the likes of Spain and Germany and then when we think we have got there they will have moved on again.

There's a lot wrong with English football, but from an entertainment perspective, it delivers - even in the lower leagues where technique is inferior. 1. Should achievements in international tournaments be the be-all-and-end-all? No. I follow football to be entertained every week, not every two years in the summer. 2. Do we want to see our football resemble the borefest that is the Spanish national team?I don't. If that's "technique", they can keep it.

i think it has been a poor euro championship, bereft of quality and entertainment, apart from one or two games.Spain and Germany have shown themselves to be the best of a quite bad bunch imho

I thought exactly the same Lambeth you can read my earlier post after the Spain France bore match I would be interested in your view. torquayfans.boards.net/index.cgi?board=matchday&action=display&thread=9600&page=1We do seem to have forgotten about "entertainment" and these later knock out matches have been poor in that respect Combine the qualities of our traditional game and style with higher technical ability I think the Germans are currently the closest to that ideal.

Am I alone in thinking that the France v Spain match was a complete and utter bore for 90 % of the match? The "Digital" ultra efficient football from the Spanish, passing the ball around in perpetual circles often without any attacking intent, the object being to mesmerise and hypnotise the opposition, just doesn't do it for me. Individually and as a team they are streets above most in the competition and I suppose if I were Spanish I would be praising and celebrating this world beating team. How the game has moved on since we last won a major competition. I sat and watched the whole of the 1966 World Cup Final last weekend for the first time in probably twenty years. Tactical and player skill levels have have changed enormously, some would say for the better and in many respects that's true. The "Analogue" football of the sixties and seventies had so many other qualities that made it just as entertaining, exciting and enjoyable. to watch. What surprised me was the space players had and end to end attacking intent from both sides for over two hours on a hot summers day. There was nothing else on the players minds other than to get the ball i the oppositions box. If the Spanish way really is the future of the game, (Imagine both teams playing this way) its going to get lost on me. Sorry but for me its a turntable and black vinyl at a speed of 33 rpm with the odd digital track thrown in if the national game is to retain my interest. Oh yeh REAL wingers who can get past defenders every time for me. No, Pete, you weren't alone! If I were Spanish I would probably take a different view. You can't question the effectiveness of their approach. To reach three successive finals is a phenomenal achievement and we have to recognise that. To play as they do so consistently requires a fantastic amount of skill and I reckon most fans respect that. It doesn't make for entertaining viewing though. That Spain v France quarter final was probably the most soporific game of football I think I've ever watched. They won the World Cup by scoring 8 goals. Do they take risks? No. Do they have pacey wingers? No. Do they get the pulse of spectators racing much above resting heart rate? No! And then there's the Arsenal syndrome of blaming everything from 'anti-football' (i.e. a strategy that beats them) to 'the grass being too long' (see Fabregas' comments after the draw against Italy) and the customary blaming of the officials if it doesn't come off . Give me the rough and tumble of lower league English football any day!

Well if Spain were boring for parts of the tournament, they weren't last night!
Were Italy jaded and tired? Maybe, but the Spanish went to Extra Time against the Portuguese.
You can't argue with their record......three successive international titles is fantastic.
I'm not sure it always makes for thrilling games, but the success of their strategy speaks for itself and will surely be emulated by others.

I wonder if it will change anyone's opinion of having to play two strikers up front! Didn't we knock Spain out of the World Cup in 2006?
