More quiz questions on Torquay v Burnley 6/2/84: 1. Who was the other trialist who played his first TUFC game in that match? 2. Name the future England international and TUFC manager who was in the team. 3. Who was the club physio who played in goal? 4. Name the two YTS boys who came on as 83rd minute subs. 1. I'm guessing a non-contract player. Derek Fowler? 2. Keith Curle 3. Graham Horn 4. David Fifield and Gary Wright???

1. I'm guessing a non-contract player. Derek Fowler? No. Try again. Correct! He scored the winning goal. Correct. Released at the end of the previous season, he trained as a physio (remember the link I posted where Rioch said he did the job himself?) and was registered non-contract. The Saturday before the Burnley game, he played at Doncaster in place of Turner who had been taken ill. 4. David Fifield and Gary Wright??? I am quite impressed that you managed to get BOTH of these wrong!

What were we doing playing this game, anyway? Watched by 578, I see. On a Monday evening.
As for the outstanding answers I'd love it to be Paul Compton (1) and Mark Loram (4).
But I suspect not.
Looking at the 83/84 team picture in that old book we're down to Mark Young and Martin Powell. Who were they?
And Brian Carter. Surely not the one from the Herald Express?

The other YTS was Young - who did make it as far as an unused sub in a league game once. No runout this time for Powell (a Sherwell Valley boy!) who also got as far as sitting on the bench once. Powell actually got to play AGAINST us in a friendly the following month. Who did he play for, who scored our winning goal and why weren't we playing a league game on that day?

And Brian Carter. Surely not the one from the Herald Express? Not quite as embarrasing as the two unknown players on page 204. Someone could do with rewriting that book! If only we knew who they were, it might explain what Burnley were doing visiting Torquay on their way home from Plymouth in 1984.

Compo and Lors are indeed correct. I wanted it to be them but didn't dare think so. Legends (as we're prone to call them these days); perhaps even icons. Well, mightily significant at the very least. In their own unique ways of course. Mike Squire v Newton Abbot. But why weren't we playing Chester that day? Did they have the 'flu or something? And, when we did, not many bothered with it, did they?

But why weren't we playing Chester that day? They had seven players down with a virus and succeeded in getting the game postponed. The Football League had gone soft since they threw the book at Exeter in similar circumstances a decade earlier.

Might as well have the whole team v Burnley:
GRAHAM HORN
MARK GENNARD (MIKE SQUIRE) DAVE CARR PAUL COMPTON COLIN ANDERSON
STEVE PUGH BRIAN HUGHES STEVE LENNOX (MARK YOUNG) KEITH CURLE
RAY BISHOP (MARK LORAM) COLIN BARNES
Dave Carr, like Mark Gennard, died far too young.

STEVE PUGH BRIAN HUGHES STEVE LENNOX (MARK YOUNG) KEITH CURLE I once saw Steve Lennox play for East Fife at Montrose. Just the once, mind.

You have all got me pulling my scrap book out again! When I played in that first friendly I got on the field in the second half as I only arrived at the end of the first half because I suffered a shattered windscreen on the way and was delayed several hours! The other first-timer playing at TUFC that game I believe was Paul Compton, brought up from Bournemouth. It's amazing how Leroy Rosenior's name was brought up. My first full cap for England was when I went on for Leroy with 15 minutes to play against Scotland at Filbert Street and headed the only and winning goal. I kept my spot in the line up and started against Wales scoring again the only goal of the match in Cardiff - strangely another header. What is not recorded in the ESFA books is that I also played in a friendly for ESFA U-18 vs the Combined Armed Forces. I scored there also in our 2-0 win - this time with the right foot! So really I was 3 for 3! Leroy and I both went to Fulham where I had an injury plagued year, mainly with Achilles tendon issues and was released at the end of that dreadful year. I remember Terry Mancini, the 2nd team coach, was an utter idiot - when I played in Fulham 2nd team against smaller clubs he stood on the sidelines, when we played the likes of West Ham 2nd and Tottenham Hotspur 2nd he would pull out our regular defender to play himself!. Anyone remember Riccardo Villa of Spurs. When I played against their second team for Fulham both he and Glen Hoddle were getting back from injuries and played in the Spurs 2nd team lineup - needless to say, both were quite amazing. Another player from that England U-18 team who went on to play professionally was Michael Hooper, goalkeeper, who actually went to Liverpool. Unfortunately when he made his first team appearance he had a nightmare and I didn't hear much of him after that. Jeremy Goss on the other hand became part of the furniture at Norwich and I remember his storming goal against Bayern.
Thanks again for the memories everyone - I thought I'd forgotten all this with too many headers of heavy, soggy footballs.

I was a bit unkind saying your goal at Chesterfield was just like Gascoigne's, Mike. Gazza was running at full pelt when he scored against Scotland whereas yours at Saltergate was altogether more elegant! It went in at the far end from the Kop and there were some on there who thought it must have been TC who had scored it. They probably still do.
Currie was a local hero just up the road at Bramall Lane, and is still most Blades' favourite player. My friend and I used to go to the Lane sometimes (and cheer for the opposition) and bad as United were they rarely lost because TC and Alan Woodward were both brilliant players and they usually managed to combine to produce a goal for Woody at some point during a match.
Was Paul Holmes in the same Gulls team that you played in? His dad Albert was a very popular right back at Saltergate and I recall once when I was waiting for autographs after a match Albert came out carrying his little boy (probably Paul) on his shoulders. It was a mystery that a lad whose dad played for Chesterfield should be playing 250 miles away at Plainmoor. I wonder how that happened.

From memory there was a group of Sheffield United supporters cheering on TC at that game at Saltergate. Was Paul Holmes in the same Gulls team that you played in? We got Paul Holmes from Donny about four years after Mike's time at Plainmoor. Amazing really, because after four seasons with us, Holmesy had a spell at Birmingham before quickly going on to Everton. A Cyril Knowles signing - a manager who would have known all about lower division players north of Birmingham.

I kept my spot in the line up and started against Wales scoring again the only goal of the match in Cardiff - strangely another header. There's a lot of significance there, Mike, because Leroy was our manager between 2002 and 2006 and guided us to promotion in 2004. Any Leroy stories greatly appreciated! Another player from that England U-18 team who went on to play professionally was Michael Hooper, goalkeeper, who actually went to Liverpool. Unfortunately when he made his first team appearance he had a nightmare and I didn't hear much of him after that. Yes, I remember him. There was a bit of publicity at the time he signed for Liverpool because he'd entered the game via university. Played a fair number of games for them - and a few for Newcastle - but destined to be the understudy. And what of your time in Italy, Mike? We'd like to hear more about that.
