Another priceless win for the Gulls today and once again 1-0 was enough! Quite unbelievable in fact how week in and week out Torquay have the knack of winning by the odd goal. Again today it was not cut-and-dry for much of the match. Accrington are always stubborn opponents and a 0-0 looked on the cards. But sponsors MOTM Rene Howe had other ideas and curled a corker of a shot into the far corner of the net from just inside the penalty box on 73 minutes for the vital breakthroiugh. I thought there was a good buzz at Plainmoor today with home fans sharing the away end. There cannot have been much more room for home fans today. Crowd 3,934, 130 from Accrington.
With Torquay kicking towards the Family stand in the first half, we made a bright start. Similiar to many other matches this season, Torquay made very few clear-cut chances during the first half. When Torquay did work the ball well into good positions the ball was typically given away cheaply. Surprisingly O'Kane was as wasteful as anyone, Oastler and Morris were other culprits. As the half wore on Torquay were cranking up the pressure as their game became fluent. A couple of cracking crosses came over but no-one could take advantage, one coming from Rene Howe. Nicholson had a long range shot just wide but Torquay did not threaten enough.
In the second half Torquay finally had a glorious opportunity. After some really selfless work from Danny Stevens in the box, he fed the ball across goal to Mark Ellis of all players who just had to place the ball into an empty net a few yards out. Surely any second we would see the net bulge and celebrate? Unbelieveably Mark blasted the ball, it hit the crossbar, bounced down and away from the goal. How did he miss? It should a be a good contender for a future bad misses DVD.
Thankfully Rene saved our blushes. Jarvis had replaced Lathrope with Morris switching to central midfield and was making a decent impact. It was thanks to Jarvis winning the ball in the corner when all seemed lost that set up our goal. Howe's goal is up with one of his best and he has scored some beauties this season. I look forward to seeing it on T.V. later.
So Torquay had about 20 minutes to protect their lead. Accrington had some good moments. Ellis carelessly gave the ball away once but thankfully we got enough bodies in the way of the goal attempts. One lob from Accrington just went over with Olejnik to beat, and Olejnik had to get down sharpish to a couple of late saves. Jarvis should have sealed the game but miscued his shot in front of goal. After 4 minutes of added time the referee blew up to great cheers from the Plainmoor faithful - yet another 1-0 win!
Torquay deserved their win today. There were some good passages of play and the winner was real quality. At the back I thought Saah was impeccible constantly reading the game and winning the ball. Ellis was very solid for most of the match apart from the odd mis-hap and THAT miss. O'Kane was disappointing today, his passes and shooting often wayward. I thought the subs made an impact when they came on which is a good sign. We were running out of ideas until Jarvis came on. Likewise Atieno looked lively after replacing the tiring Howe, and Rowe-turner for Stevens late on.
Overall it was a great team effort who found a way to beat a resilient Accrington, bearing in mind 3 Torquay players who started were carrying injuries. Looking at the table right now makes great reading!
