As much as Lingy says "we are building something special here" there are no guarantees we will be in a better position next year or longer. And that's the $64000 question Pete. Do we accept that this is a season of rebuilding (ground and team) or do we aim higher and look to progress. If we do see this as a rebuilding season, who's to say we will match this form next season? I hope not, but Bobby could move to a club up the ladder during the summer if the right offer is made. So could other players and then we would be back in the rebuilding stage again. Surely we must grasp any chance of a serious showing while we can, as you can never tell whats round the corner? Its a strange season for many reasons and who in all honesty including the board would ever have imagined in their wildest dreams we would be where we are in the league after our pre season turmoil. In a strange way any management or boardroom decision making would be so much easier if we were sitting comfortably in mid table with no pressure from supporters without any relegation worries or what we have now an expectancy to push on and go for it. I still get this feeling that the priority is to keep costs to a minimum with an attitude of it it happens it happens as we've already achieved our goal of safely staying in the football league and maintaining a solvent club. Sure they would love for it to happen but not at any cost.

Desperately need a seasoned goalscorer and also put a stop to this ridiculous "one forward" tactic. Winning games 1-0 or 2-1 with negative formations will always come unstuck in the end.

Stu, its a perfectly viable plan for away games where the onus is on the opposition to attack and we can hit them on the counter. You're right about it at home though

I would agree with you ditmar, I think we must try and push home our advantage this season, it could all be so different this time next season. Surely there is a middle ground of bringing in a couple of new faces to freshen up the squad without completely blowing the budget plans, the funds were offered after the southend game when we looked to be headed in the wrong direction. We need another attacking option and hopefully Ling is going through his contacts as I type!!! Obviously we don't need wholesale change as the squad have done so well but a couple of new faces to give impetus for the run in is most definitely needed...

I think we have to wait untill after the Gillingham game before we can bring in any new striker-shit, do we need one though because when we went two down to Bradford the game was effectively over because we were never going to score three-so's said striker can be with us throughout the play offs...if we make them that is!

All winning runs will come unstuck in the end. In 113 years of playing 5, 4, 3 or 2 up front we have NEVER had as successful a run as we have just witnessed. Surely results prove that Ling's tactics have been anything but ridiculous.

Added to that, nearly all the top sides play only one striker now (or even none, technically) - getting control of the midfield is far more important so the extra man goes in there. Even at our level, football is being played on the ground a lot more than it used to (now that old dinosaurs like Beck and Atkins have disappeared off the face of the Earth) so Ling's tactics make perfect sense

We also played with one striker at the end of the 2009/10 season when we had a great run of results playing Rendell up front as a lone target man with Benyon playing off him almost as a classic 10 and the midfield pushing up to support when required. While the return of Nicho was held up by many as the sole reason for our success, it was noted by some that Rendell and Muzzy had only been returned to first team slots just before then and, with "the whole being greater than the sum of the parts", this formation and personnel-mix strengthened the defence and enabled us to keep 7 clean sheets in a row. Keep it hush and don't tell the Pop Side...

Thought it was four clean sheets (all winning 1 nil) coupled with three 2 - 1's? Whatever formation we play we are still a striker short - horror of horrors, you may need to change formation to win. I just hope Lingy keeps hold of that lucky four leaf clover!

Nothing wrong with having one striker...I'd just like a striker that actually does what it says on the tin his CV!
