So our reward for a win away against league 1 opposition is more of the same except against a bigger club in rather better form. They have just narrowly won away, 0-1 at Chesterfield in a local Derby, with another 1-0 home win against Carlisle and a rather better 3-0 home win against Oxford in the first round of this competition. Ironically, they are all teams that we have beaten during our recent runs in the FA Cup!
Prior to this little run, they lost 2-1 away to Stevenage, could only draw 4-4 at home to Exeter and somehow got knocked out of the JPT by Bradford on penalties so they are not invincible by a long way.
However, they do have some quality, mainly in the shape of Ched Evans, a Wales International and purchased from Man City reportedly on a £3,000,000 package. After suffering some injuries he has hit form, scoring 4 goals in the last three games and unsurprisingly tops the charts for his club with nine so far this season. Next in the chart is Matt Phillips, another loan striker from Blackpool but thankfully after scoring six goals in a months loan during October was recalled. The other two strikers on five goals each are Chris Porter (signed from Derby) and veteran Richard Cresswell. If that is not enough, Sheffield have just signed James Beattie on a short term deal but whether he will be fit enough for this after a long layoff is anyone's guess!
As for Torquay, our side seems to revolve around the midfield fulcrum of Mansell, Lathrope and O'Kane and for the second week running, we have one of them out suspended. Ling, normally upfront with his selection thoughts has yet to decide on how to replace Lathrope who has been key to those improved defensive showings and boy did we need him for this one. Whether Ling puts Oastler there is a tricky one as he is much improved in the full back position and the defence needs to be top notch.
Best of luck to anyone traveling up for this and hopefully it will be a decent game with any sort of result probably on a par with the best that has been achieved in recent years.
