After a muted start we have now got two very tough matches this week and will do well to maintain our unbeaten record to the season. Southampton had a great start to their league campaign yesterday winning emphatically 3-1 against Leeds at St Marys and the goal they conceded was a penalty with the final kick of the match. Our defence will need to be top notch against the likes of Lambert and the goal scorers yesterday, Hammond, Lallana and Connolly. Their attendance yesterday was 25,860 and hopefully a fair few will return to give us a decent pay day. It is possible that Ling will keep the same side as on Saturday to give the side the chance to gel more but personally I would like to see the odd change or two.

I would like to see him play all the peripheral players including the young lads especially if he intends to do so in league matches . They all need first team playing time and the result, in all honesty is pretty irrelevant. Also an early opportunity to dabble with formations and player combinations, not convinced with Saah alongside Robertson or maybe I was just spoilt last season. A big crowd will be expecting a lambs to the slaughter exercise in any case and its unlikely that we will progress. Use the match as a competitive friendly and take the money and run!

Interesting to see how Ling approaches this. On one hand you could say that being drawn away to a Championship side that have won their last 7 consecutive league fixtures means we stand very little chance, & so let's give some of the squad players a run out.
Alternatively our defensive unit of Bobby, Roberstson, Saah etc have only played one competitive match together & they need more games to build up an understanding.
As there were aspects of the defensive performance on Saturday that needed improving, ML may decide to field the same defenders for a reasonable proportion of the match to see if he can improve things further before our trip to meet Pirate Paul.

I`d like to hear Saah, if he`s club captain then he should be more vocal like Manse, take the bull by the horns like Manse and show he`s club captain. I know ultimately that Manse is team captain and has the say on the pitch and without treading on Manses toes he could add to the verbal encouragement and support on the field of play, like a vice captain to Manse, working together! Mark Ellis, in my opinion after seeing Saah a couple of times now, is a better defender and far more vocal and commanding, Robbo is playing well so to drop him would be hard on him and Saah needs to really justify keeping his spot over Mark. I don`t know the answer but I would like to see a pairing of either Mark and Chris or Mark and Brian so there is more vocals in defence, that way you have Bobby yelling his lungs out at the back four, Mark`s voice in that back four and Lee commanding from the middle. Just an idea of the back of us leaking alot of goals currently, maybe more command is required like we used to get from Branno! This game would be a good chance to look at that as a way of working out the best combination we have until more work is done to reinforce the defence.

I agree that picking two out of three can't have been easy. It's a bit tough on Mark Ellis not being in the team for the first match but I'm sure we'll see him before long.
With 3 tough away games (Southampton,Bristol Rovers, & Aldershot) coming up, Lingy will surely be willing to try something or someone else if the central defence is looking too leaky. Then again, if we get good results & don't conceed many then Robbo & Saah will have deserved to keep their places.
I'm still not entirely sure what the role of Club captain is. On the field there's no doubt that Manse is the leader & rightly so. But off field I don't think Ling wants all the responsibilities piled onto Manse's shoulders as well.
With a squad of 20 or so players there's going to be problems cropping up all the time. Maybe Saah can represent the new boys, who have just come to the Club this Summer. Ling knows Saah & probably trusts his opinion & his ability to represent the views of the players. Maybe the Club Captain also organises the skittles evenings etc..I'm really not sure, but I don't necessarily think it involves any particular role on the pitch.
If Manse needs someone else to help gee up the players on the pitch I don't think it has to be Saah.
If we look at it from Saah's point of view how difficult would it be for him to start shouting at, or instructing Robertson ? Saah has been playing non League football for the past 2 years & Robbo has been playing at a higher standard. Saah has been at the Club 3 weeks & Robbo has been here 3 years or more. Saah is pulling on the shirt for the first time & Robbo's played 150 + games for Torquay. Saah is younger than Robbo, although not by much.
Everything points to Robbo being the person who should be helping & instructing Saah, and saddling a player with an obscure title like 'Club captain' doesn't alter the reality of the situation.
Let's hope it's a problem of having too many good players to choose from for the positions available rather than too few, but I also hope that Mark Ellis grabs the opportunity with both hands when it next presents itself, as it surely will.

From the Southampon website:
Olejnik, Oastler, Saah, Robertson, Nicholson, McPhee, O'Kane, Mansell, Morris, Howe and Atieno. Kee doesn't seem to have made the bench with 7 subs named.
