Straight 4-4-2 to start. When Kudi replaced Quinn, it became a 4-1-2-3 with Oastler holding, O'Kane to his right, Kudi to his left, Atieno up top with Macklin to his right and Yeoman to his left.
Second half was straight 4-4-2. Spear and McPhee switched late in the game (Spear going wide right and McPhee pushed up front).
First goal was a high lob from miles out by Oastler. Ellis had the ball in the net for the second, but the ref had already whistled for a pen. Atieno seemed to shove Eunan away to grab the ball for the penalty - funny how trialists are so desperate for a goal!
I thought Olejnik (who otherwise gave a very confident performance) was at fault in hesitating for their goal - guess who popped up from nowhere to stick it in! Hilly also cleared one off the line and gave a commanding display bossing the Tivvy team from centre back. He was here, he was there, he was everywhere and fully deserved the man of the match award.
We looked comfortably in command in the first half, but far less settled and disciplined in the second. The big differences between the halves I would say were that Oastler and O'Kane controlled the midfield in a way that Mansell and Lathrope didn't and Saah made a big difference at the back - in terms of organisation and distribution.
Very decent pasty and chips for £3.20 - not quite Kidderminster Harriers but very nice.
I love these summer evening games at non-league grounds around Devon. Any chance of squeezing in an extra PSF at either Buckland or Dawlish please?

very impressed with saah tonight, has quality about him,as jon says an excellent first half followed by what can only be described as a mish mash second period, where we looked decidedly average. The usual relaxed and hospitable folk at tiverton,on a smashing summers evening, made me think about minus 2 in february with me blast frozen love spuds,i for one would love the footy to be a summer game, especially now that father time catching up with me.Oh and Hilly, still doing the business with his usual enthusiasm,a loud clap of applause from tivvy and torquay fans alike,on his scoring.Saturday will be the acid test for us,on how our season may unravel.

Just to add, very pleasant evening at Tivvy. Pitch looked better than I've ever seen it there. Usual friendly welcome, but a bit sad to see that they don't get the numbers through the turnstiles like they used to.
Thought it was quite entertaining for a pre-season game, although Atieno annoyed me. I can obviously understand his desire to impress, but he reminded me of the 'selfer' kids you used to get at school who never, ever passed to anyone. Too many times he just ran up a blind alley. I also thought his muscling of O'Kane out of the way to take the penalty was pretty childish. Guess we'll see soon enough whether Ling considers him a rough diamond worth polishing.
Tivvy's No.8 did a very good job on Spear in the second half. Anyone catch his name?

Any news as to why Halpin didn`t play?
i thought Leadbetter had a toe infection so wasn`t going to travel but ended up playing. So did i get it wrong that Halpin has the toe infection? Or is he on trial somewhere else?

Halpin was injured, Milber. I was hoping to see him have a flyer in pre-season and stake his claim for regular football - still a few weeks to go though.

Too many times he just ran up a blind alley. I also thought his muscling of O'Kane out of the way to take the penalty was pretty childish. Guess we'll see soon enough whether Ling considers him a rough diamond worth polishing. I know what you mean about Atieno - it looked like he was screaming "me me me" all the time. It was the kind of performance that catches the eye, but doesn't really impress me. In contrast, the young lad Quinn out on the left went quietly about his business - finding space, showing good awareness and a good touch without constantly barging on to centre stage. In fairness to Atieno, trialists are under tremendous pressure to make an impression quickly. Sometimes they might modify their performance to try to catch the eye and end up impressing nobody - like the over-enthusiastic interviewee who talks too much and ends up making a prat of himself. I suppose it is for the professional managers and coaches to see past all of that and look at the actual potential that is there. If Ling does consider him a rough diamond worth polishing, he won't hold "trialist over-enthusiasm" against him.
