That was just the tonic we all needed after a depressing last week. What a difference a win makes for the feel good factor. Stockport looked everything like a team at the bottom of the league but that should not detract that this was an impressive display from the Gulls. It was interesing to see us playing 4-3-3 with Robinson, Zebroski and Kee playing in attack from left to right. Apart from the score-line, the biggest boost for me today were the outstanding performances of our new boys, Stanley and Robinson. Crowd 1,954, officially 196 from Stockport.
Both halves were pretty much one way traffic and debutant Potter in goal could not have wished for an easier afternoon. Torquay got a deserved breakthrough on 13 minutes. Following a defender's mistake Kee found himself through on goal. Glennon saved from Kee but Zebroski scored from the rebound. The other highlights of the first half were a cross from Nicholson that was superbly volleyed on the turn by Robinson that Glennon tipped onto the bar. Robinson was a real livewire who showed great dribbling skills going past defenders and clearly knows how to shoot. Torquay should have made it 2-0 before half-time. Following another defensive error, Zebroski was through on goal however Glennon was able to parry away his shot.
As well as the opposition both teams had to contend with a horrible swirling wind and rain. Torquay had the wind against them attacking the Family stand in the second half. Stockport showed a bit more attacking intent in the second half but they did not seriously threaten all afternoon. The second half was a question of whether Torquay could get a second goal and put the game to bed. Kee finally did that on 73 minutes and what a goal it was! It must have been close to the half-way line where Kee got the ball and dribbled it towards goal past defenders. He made room for himself and from outside the penalty area hit a peach of a shot into the bottom corner of the net. At last we could relax and enjoy the game. There were times in the second half when our build up play was delightful, there was plenty of probing, good quality passing and using the width of the pitch. It was great to see the new boys Stanley and Robinson very much involved in the moves. Stanley hit a magnificent volley from a Zebroski cross that brought a fine parried save from Glennon. Stanley was very involved putting himself around and also showed his vision once putting an attacker clean through with a delightful pass. Likewise Robinson was in the thick of the action and at times found himself on the left flank where he often beat defenders using great close control and skill. It was good to see Zebroski, the villian last week, having a strong game. He is our only striker who wins headers.
So it turned to be a comfortable 2-0 win in the end and the Plainmoor faithful were rewarded with a much needed boost. Perhaps we can start looking at teams above us now rather than worrying about those below us? If we perform to this standard for the rest of the season we have no worries.
