I will make a confession here, I have always been a fan Of Steve Woods. He has been a great servant to the club, he as formed many good defensive partnerships with many other defenders over the years.
Yes he has had bad games and yes he has made costly mistakes, but name me a player who has not. Yet he Is one player who has come In for plenty Of stick from some fans.
I think we will all agree that he and Robertson have formed a good understanding at the back, since they have been playing together, but are there any other reasons you can think Off, why he seems to be playing some Of his best games for us at this time.

I see we are thinking along the same line here Dave. I put a little post on the Todd thread which turned into a bit of praise for Woods.

Don't wait up all night will you Point of information: Merse sleeps from approx 9pm and rises each weekday morning at 3am ready to start working at 5am. Steve Woods IS playing well at the moment and I think the reason is that he has never been under so much pressure to hold down a place in the team in his entire Plainmoor career. Justification indeed, for the benefits to be gained from having a strong squad. He is even responding to the the general team ethic of keeping possession as a priority (something Toddy disastrously took to extremes on a couple of occasions last season) and his "standing and pointing" is legendary! ;D However, I do hear his forecast move to Truro earlier in the season broke down due to the reluctance of the management to let him take the treatment table with him and RomfordGull and I are wandering just why, when the entire squad gather and come over to the Yellow Army to thank them for their support on the road at the end of games; he can usually be seen skulking off alone - to get the hot water first?

Merse, who Is Steve Woods under pressure from? I can only think Of Ellis, or do you mean the midfielders, who Bucks thought would be good defenders. Just put your hand up and admit you have got It wrong for so long about Steve Woods and your judgment Is clouded by some faded memory you have, Of some event that you claim happened In a car park. I mean Merse, you have had to U-turns before, we are getting used to them, so time for another I think.

Only Ellis? There are Robbo,Toddy, Brough and Hodges who can all play at centre back...............surely the most covered position in our squad. Woods' current performances are way ahead of his run of the mill ones of the past few seasons, and let's get this straight once and for all. I did not have a row with Woods at Halifax. I and others were berating Hilly and a couple of others over the disgraceful display that afternoon (a display that led to the manager and coach apologising to us and subsequently transfer listing 4 players - Beds, Davie Graham, David Brown and Garry Brabin) Whilst Beds and Hilly took it all in good grace and have remained friends with us all to this day. (I've twice gone to games specifically to see Hilly this season, spent time with him before and after and have the phone numbers of both players) Woods chose to shout to us "don't blame us, go and ask the chairman" to which his father and brother decided to add their opinion that we should "feck off and support another club"So in reality this myth that there was a row with Woods in a car park is total balony................there was a heated discussion with two old friends to which Woods' and his family objected. Got it?

You said you were never going to repeat the story again Merse?
So you say you were berating Hilly and a couple of others over the disgraceful display that afternoon
Well that just goes to prove what Enzo has said many times to you, that when it suits you, Its fine to berate, players and even managers, yet some dared to do that recently against Bucks and who was the first to moan at those fans.
So tell me when Is It fine for you to berate when the team played rubbish and when can be be alright for everyone else,
Double standard Or what Merse, shame On you.

I would tend to agree Woodsie may have had a shock to the system when it looked like he might be heading for Truro. Fair play to him for pulling out the stops ever since.
I've not noticed him skulking off, however. In the past I've always been impressed with his efforts to gee the crowd up. Not to mention his uncanny knack to put in last ditch interceptions. Probably more than any Gulls defender I've EVER seen.
Keep it up big man.

The "berating" was over lack of effort, not poor form. Lack of effort that got 4 players transfer listed as a result and one of them (Brown) never played again and another (Brabin) was on his bike pretty soon after. Both mine and Romford's relationships with Beds and Hilly continue to this day and when he gets back, Capital Gull will also lend his considerable weight behind the truth. The fact that you persist in repeating third party versions, is the reason I put the record straight.

A Little PS for you Merse As you stated you would never tell the Woods story again and just did It on the forum, therefore going back on what you said, can we allow atheringtongull, to be able to go back on what he says. Or this the second example today Of one rule for you and one for everyone else

I'm not "stopping" him any more than you are Dave; I merely reminded him of his last hollow statement of intent. He'll be back if he wants to be!

No I'm not stopping him Merse and he did log in yesterday and I hope he will continue to do so.
I asked you to quote what you called my third party versions, you claim I have repeated concerning you and Woods In a car park.Really Merse you are the first one to start asking people to quote what they think you have said, just maybe they did not use your words.
Yet you make claims that I have said something that I clearly have not and since you have not posted any quote, you must now surly admit you have made a mistake with your statement.
No need for flowers, Staples ones are still in bloom, but a simple sorry will do.

I would prefer Todd, Ellis and Robertson over Woods at the moment. However, I cannot ever fault Woods' determination and effort over the years. It is churlish to criticise him.
He reacted differently to Merse and the fans at Halifax but so what? He is a different character to Hilly and Beds. He's allowed to be himself and his relations are allowed to be on his side. To be honest, I would have been over the boards trying to rip someone's head off! He was probably just as angry as his own performance as the fans.
I admire Steve Woods for sticking with the club through thick and thin and overall, being a great servant.
Afterall, he was one of my stalwarts in my Championship Manager computer game in getting TUFC to the first division (old styley)(not the very old)(the one before C'ship)(and yes, I should get out more).
With Dave R on this one (but don't count on me next time!).
Still, at the end of the day, this season, how many losing games has he played in?
