I was actually in Belgium last month and had the pleasure of stopping by the brewery tap at Wesvleteren. A wonderful place with cheap and hearty Flemish fayre and some of the best beer on the planet. I do not advise cycling on from there after a few glasses of Westy 12 however! One tip though...when you're next in the UK try some of our dark cask ales. There is much affinity between Belgian and British stouts. Achouffe's a nice place and it's beers are among the first I've ever tasted along with the Brugse Tripel! Brugs Beertje, I know that place very well... Opposite is a restaurant called The Hobbit, they have excellent spare ribs on their menu! Westvleteren, haven't been there. I still have to explore the area in and around Ieper. Visit the War Museum and catch a few of the climbs from the Ronde van Vlaanderen. Dark cask ales, have you got some names for me? I happen to be in Torquay next week!

Dark cask ales, have you got some names for me? I happen to be in Torquay next week! I love West Flanders, a very evocotive landscape with a laidback orderliness about the towns and villages that I find appealing. I also like the fact that if I get an early train to Dover, catch the Dunkirk ferry and ride with a tail wind I can be there for lunchtime by bike Probably not the best time for dark cask ales right now given the weather! Also, being London-based I'm not best placed to comment on the availability of cask ales in Torquay. However, you will probably find Westcountry beers Otter and Tribute along with regulars like London Pride and Green King (all perfectly drinkable but unexceptional, and not dark either). Look out for 'Bays' - these guys brew good beer brewed in Torbay. If you're after something a bit more adventuous look out for Proper Job (a hoppy beer from St Austel brewery) or pop along to the Crown and Sceptre in St Marychurch and see if they've got anything on. If you're in the UK in May, you might take advantage of CAMRA's Mild in May month. Mild has a reputation of being a bit of an old man's drink drunk by Brummies, but this relates to the Milds of yore rather than the rich, malty, toasty examples of these dark beers brewed now.

We catch the 0639 from Torquay and roll up at Bruges Railway Station at 4pm - dependant on what station we catch the train from - I understand there are 3 in Brussels!!
