As Oscar Wilde said.............. "As for the virtuous poor, one can pity them, of course, but one cannot possibly admire them. They have made private terms with the enemy, and sold their birthright for very bad pottage. They must also be extraordinarily stupid." But of course just because Oscar Wilde said that it doesn't make it true, anymore than things you or me say. He was a jailbird after all, although it is also easy to put a different slant on that Of course it doesn't make it true. He just puts it better than me. Why would I reinvent a wheel that Oscar already crafted?

Lambie there are many people on benefits who hate being on them and would love to be working, even if that meant they got less money. For benefits too high read wages too low . . . This issue hardly exists in countries where there are well paid jobs available even for the totally unskilled. It's a real shame British workers don't have the same rights and protection as people do in most developed EU countries. Maybe it's time to stop believing all the nonsense about the EU and start asking why the money behind the papers wants you to believe it . . .

Our Government does the best it can but it's not cheap putting up a family of asylum seekers with nine children...particularly if each of the kids wants their own remote control to operate the plasma TV. Foreign aid for India's space programme isn't cheap either, plus we need to keep back a hefty amount in case we have to compensate the Prisoners who have missed out on the chance to vote.
So we have to tax companies & individuals highly, we can't leave a lot of money in their pockets for high wages, our Government has to swipe a fair old chunk, not forgetting another slice of those wages when the poor sods fill up their petrol tanks in order to drive to work by means of astronomical fuel taxes.
As you console yourself with a pint & a f*g for goodness sake don't start thinking of how much of your wages have gone back to the Government for those items either or the latest VAT increase.
There's only so much money to go around and if you want to pay out high benefits or to hand over cash to our mates abroad who quite fancy another large slice of 'aid' you won't be able to afford to leave much in the workers pockets after tax.
All in good time. It's a question of priorities & for the moment we really need to be concentrating on the robbers & rapists who didn't get provided with a voting slip at the last election..oh & the sex offenders who feel their human rights aren't quite in order by seeing their name cropping up on a list year after year. There'll be plenty more 'deserving' cases coming down the line to take their place I've no doubt, all only to ready with their compensation claims. I really can't see when we're going to find the time to consider the plight of the poor old British worker.

Lambeth, I had just come in & cleaned off my spray can having added the words 'Poles Go Home' to the front of Mr & Mrs Lubanski's house next door, & was hoping to settle down quietly to read todays Daily Mail when I find you've contributed another two-penneth worth . You should be warned..just as revolution has been brewing in Tunisia,Bahrain,Egypt,Libya etc..so it is at the TFF ! We aim to reclaim the political ground from the London Left. Merse has already followed Mubarak into exile & his remaining henchmen from the Islington Set ( & splinter group the Lambeth Set) will not find it easy holding onto power in the face of a rising tide of local Devonshire rebellion. Obama,Cameron et al are busy telling the people of these middle/far east countries about the delights of democracy & how much better it is to have your views heard & responded to. Yet what puzzles their public at home is democracy doesn't seem to work that way here. Take a look at your list, & ordinary people just can't work out why the louder they boo things it only results in their Government roaring hooray at those very same things instead.

;D ...I'm not going anywhere, Joe; those of us who live South of the River are made of far sterner stuff than that.
Not sure I accept the label 'London-left'. I have a deep contempt for the Labour Party, as I do for vast parts of 'the left'.
Unlike the individuals you name, I have neither power nor a court of sycophants. Nor do I seek any. There are few things worse than a back-slapping society.

References to people that help segregate individuals on this forum is in my opinion not constructive or helpfull to anyone, to refrain from such would be applaudable! We are TUFC fans regardless of location and should always stick together! This is just my view!

I see that one of the hospitals in Cornwall may close as they look to make budget cuts of £27,000,000 - still at least the Olympic Bike Track is now open and only cost £93,000,000.

What a magnificent edifice it is though: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12301465As someone who was inspired during the 2008 Olympic games to try my luck on the track at the Manchester Velodrome (which is open to the general public btw - imagine being allowed to phone up and book a slot on the Wembley pitch!!!), I can vouch for the effect these types of facilities can have on encouraging people to take up a fantastic sport and pastime such as cycling. With any luck the people who gett inspired to go on their bikes won't be needing to use expensive oncology and cardiac centres, thereby freeing cash and beds for those who do.

The TFF will try and get a few bus loads from Cornwall to go up and use it lambie, they are going to need to using your logic as they won't have a hospital even it they do need to go to one.

It's not on to be closing hospitals without putting in place adequate replacements I agree, but by yours and Chelston's logic nothing 'less important' than hospitals would ever get built! Besides, if the Cornish insist on flogging us their pasties (there isn't a train station in the capital that isn't befouled by the reeking stench of mass-produced oggies) then they shouldn't be surprised when their hospitals are closed in revenge
