There’s a tribute in this programme to the sterling efforts of groundsman Freddie King – who was to remain at Plainmoor for ever and a day – but otherwise it makes for grim reading as we found ourselves drifting towards the dubious honour of becoming founder members of Division Four.
Not sure if United's form was bad enough to spoil a two-year-old’s Christmas but, remembering the tantrums of throwing my teddy over the railings on Babbacombe Downs, I wouldn’t mind betting that was during the summer of 1958 in the aftermath of Torquay United failing to make the cut. Surely my screaming, tearful plaintive call was one of “I want my teddy back. Sort it out, Webber!” Silver lining? Not that year.
