When did the Devon Premier Cup come into existence pushing the Devon Senior Cup down a notch in the scale of honours? I've a feeling it was late 60's / early 70's but am not sure. Can't remember Sams FC but do remember Plymouth City who won the Senior Cup but weren't around for long.
Like Plymouth City (Pussycat Club), Sams FC (Mr Sams night spot) were financed by a night club in Plymouth..................In the old days, City had to adopt a more conventional and acceptable name to the County FA in order to progress up the football ladder having started out as Pussycat Club; but by the time Sams came around there were no such prejudices. Rather like Ferranti Thistle having to reinvent themselves as Meadowbank Thistle (now Livingstone Utd)on attaining the Scottish League and the old battle for the right to wear sponsor's logos on the kits.
It's a good job the trusting folk of Buckland Athletic didn't have RomfordKev and his old non league mates marauding around their trophy cabinet yesterday or else the Devon Senior Cup would be history by now ~ disappeared history! ;D
Kev was safely tucked away watching a former Gull (not a very good on mind you) playing in the aforesaid Scottish League lower divisions yesterday, but I'll let him tell you all about that when he gets back armed with copious photos of his latest round of "Sweaty Ground Hopping"
I once lined a St Lukes College Cup Final for the Devon County FA (can't recall the year), didn't that superceded the Devon Premier Cup? The game was played at that well known glamour location, Cullompton Rangers betweeen Exmouth Town and Bideford if I remember correctly; and I must have a trophy stashed commemorating the event away somewhere; but as they mean jack shit to me I couldn't tell you whether all those shoe box fillers are in Devon, Birmingham or somewhere in London. I know I'm a funny old sod and have been a transient bugger in my life; but they really don't mean anything to me when put alongside life's memories and my kids.................I do ensure Anthony's rather magnificent and burgeoning collection are on show in the living room cabinet though!
