Only just picked up on this thread so these comments are a trifle late maybe.
Re the banjo in Princess gardens and the amount of land claimed from the sea, the two maps shown way back in Dec 08 show that there was an additional bit of promenade made. Look at the curve of Princess Pier in the two images and look at the length of the stub of pier by the Pavilion car park to see how much. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it built out over concrete landing craft obstructions put there during the war.. Moving on to the German aerial photo it must have predated the building of the D day slips where the aquarium used to be.
Finally, re the St Marychurch bombing, my understanding was that the plane hit the top of the Catholic church spire (where 7 generations of my family have worshipped, by the way) dropped its bomb and then crashed onto properties in Teignmouth Road (there is still a gap).
On a slightly different line but more related to TU, the old ice cream factory in Warbro Rd and the flats opposite it were built to replace properties bombed in a tip and run raid. I used to walk past them to and from matches in the days when a policeman would unlock the control box by the traffic lights to manually control traffic leaving the ground after a match! No need for that now.
