The baby is called Kito..I cant remember the names of the adults. I refuse to go to Colchester after that day at wembley.

The first 6 are of the elephants -there were 3 of them, but knowing my luck, the pics are all of the same one!! So why don't they take a leaf out of football's book and put their names on their backs?  I'm sure one of those is actually Jim anyway! |

There is another good reason I’m glad Jimd is back and that is I wanted to share a few photos with him. Not sure how long Jim has been at the zoo as the head Elephant keeper, but I believe I’m correct in saying his two girls arrived at Paignton zoo in 1972. They never had the luxury back then they now enjoy as it was just an elephant house and a concrete area outside they could walk in outside and it was not that large an area. Not sure it was allowed, but people would feed the elephants as they could reach over from where they were standing and get their trunks close to the people. I always wondered if an elephant ever fell down the gap between the end of the concrete and the wall the people stood behind. I can’t be 100% sure when I took these pictures but it must be about 25 years ago, maybe Jim can count something and tell us how old his girls were in these pictures.     |

I have looked after the elephants for 19 years Dave.
Both the girls arrived at Paignton in 1977 not 1972.
Duchess is 40 years old and Gay is 39, so if you took those pics about 25 years ago then they would have been 15 and 14.
Believe it or not but that old enclosure was not all concrete floors. It had four levels, two were concrete the other two were sand. The sand was so old and compact though it was as hard as the concrete levels. It was still a horrible enclosure.
The idea of the moat was that if an elephant fell into it we would be able to walk them out of it as it went up to the level of the enclosure at the rear of it...........glad we never had to test the theory though!!
