Old Mother Hubbards at Yealmpton? Correct Nick and sadly the building has lost so much of the charisma it had as it has Chinese writing all over it, it simply does not look right on such a fine old building. Do you know any history this building may have? was it ever a pub or a coach house?

I have found this Nick
Many myths surround the legend of Old Mother Hubbard, did she exist or didn't she? but the cottage she is supposed to have occupied whilst working as housekeeper at nearby Kitley House does exist. It is a beautiful thatched stone and cob low building from around 400 years ago, and is now a pretty place for visitors to take a light meal or enjoy after-noon tea in a rich historic "cosy-cottage" atmosphere. The restaurant, family owned and run, is also open in the evening for dinner.
The Nursery rhyme "Old Mother Hubbard" was written and illustrated by Miss Sarah Catherine Martin in 1804, following her retirement as housekeeper of nearby Kitley House, the estate of Sir Henry Bastard. He was the Resident Commissioner of the Navy at Portsmouth and counted amongst his friends Prince William Henry, later to become King. The Prince is known to have visited the estate and many legends abound in the area about Sarah and the Prince. Sarah continued to live out her retirement in Mother Hubbard's cottage.

Glad the answers have appeared Dave as wouldn't have been able to sleep without knowing! . Interesting that Old Mother Hubbards and I of course recognised it and have gone past it loads of times but just could not get in my mind where it is. The one I really had no idea was the Railway Inn. The alley reminded me of Dartmouth but having worked there for a quite short time I was sure there wasn't a Railway Inn. So Dawlish .... will have to go on the list! Good thing about this forum is it seems that somebody will eventually come up with the answer ... may even entice some who read but don't post to step forward and help us all out! Can't play tomorrow I'm afraid. Early start for first appointment at Hartland at 8.45am, then Bideford, then Barnstaple, then back along the A39 to Tintagel, then back the other way on A39 for last appointment at Ilfracombe at 6pm. Home about 9pm, but will be carefully noting pubs and other points of interest in case they appear in future editions of Dave's Diaries! Strange yesterday as I hadn't been past Stibb Cross for a while and as I was involved in something at the pub many years ago I had a really good stare at it, only to see it facing me when I got home and logged on! ;D PS. Dartmoor crosses and random North Devon roundabouts are ok but I think it's scraping the barrel with laybys!!

All these early starts by people still posting on a forum at this time of night its no wonder there are so many people on the roads in the morning who are half asleep. Not me as my van knows the way on its bloody own as it has done the same routes so many times, I just stick it in auto pilot.

So let me see, Stefano needs to be in Hartland at 8.45am, in bed by 22.33pm. Stuartb needs to leave home at 6am in bed by 22.48pm. The old man of the three has to be in Weymouth by 7.30am and is still going strong on the forum

Thanks for enlightening us about Old Mother Hubbard, Dave, but I note you're not heading far enough up into Somerset to meet Jack and Jill walking up the hill to fetch that pail of water. Meanwhile I'm off to a football match....

Now I saw this field today and couldn't resist a picture as I think this is VERY obscure, although no doubt a piece of cake to our Forum brethren. The concrete pillars were placed alongside, and are the remaining remnants of, the railway which used to run through here... Where was I? Looking the other way, below, and at first glance there appears nothing but a field and hedge... but look closely...

Where Have I Been Today.Van all loaded. Alarm reset, building all locked up and its time to get on the road only I now know I won’t make Weymouth for 7.30am as a call in Bridport has requested I call in and see them. Van put on auto pilot and despite a headache that I feel is just caused by lack of sleep (bloody forum ;D) its time to think about today’s photo pub quiz. The problem is there are too many brainy buggers on here, there are some you would put money on to win Mastermind and then there are those who are so well travelled that you never know where they are going to turn up next. There are also a few who I believe might be professional pub crawlers only you try getting them to admit it. The thing is I have not won yet, I have yet to go to bed with any questions not answered correctly and so I decided today I needed to be mean and when I say mean, I mean really really mean. I told you all that today I would be calling on Toolfix customers in Weymouth, Dorchester, Blandford forum, Yeovil, Crewkerne, Chard, Weston Super Mare, Bridgwater, Taunton, Wiveliscombe, Wellington, Cullumpton and I can add Bridport to the list as well, only I have not taken one single photo in any of the above places, but the photos I have taken were still taken in places I have been today, now you have got to admit I have been a bit sneaky. I’m feeling good and I’m feeling like a winner and have a good feeling I will be going to bed tonight with a big grin on my face as finally at last I come out the winner. But hey I have a problem and that is mean has never been my middle name and so the kind hearted soul I am just knows that I will have to give you a few clues to help you on your way, but so sure I am of winning I do not feel there is going to be a need to put up a tiebreaker photo. Here are the clues. Three photos were taken before 8am Two were taken between 1pm and 1.15pm. Two pubs are in Somerset Two pubs are in Devon. One pub is in Dorset. If one of the pubs in Devon had been built 400 yards up the road it would have been in a different county One of the villages one pub is in has recently hit the national news and the J.Vine show. If a pub in one village was your final pub on your pub crawl and as a result of two much drink you ended up getting your words in the wrong order, you could be forgiven for expecting Inspector Barnaby to turn up. So here they are and not in the order they were taken. You know what? I think I have made this far to easy now that I have given you all these clues and by the time Steptoe gets home from is long day out with his horse and cart we might well need that tiebreaker so here it is.Tiebreaker

The Clock House Inn is an easy one for me, obviously. It is in that place of speed-camera infamy... Chideock, Dorset.

I think the two Devon pubs are the Old Innat Kilmington and the Hunters Lodge at Raymonds Hill, just shy of the Dorest border. As Leigh has already said, the Dorest pub is the Clock House at Chideock but I am struggling with the two Somersetones although I am sure I recognise both. As for the tie breaker - you've got to be having a laugh, Dave!
