Don’t worry Jon I won’t go there again and my reference to Bateson buying the ground was only made as he was never going to replace the main stand unless he owned the freehold. As I said if the council had sold him the ground then I’m sure he would have then completed rebuilding the last part of the ground and who knows he might then have remained it the Bateson Stadium.
Even if he had owned the ground when Roberts turned up, it would not have really mattered as Roberts was never in a real position to complete the deal he made with Bateson and the only question for me would be, would our board have still gone ahead and took over the club as far more money would have been involved.
Putting any new and expensive structure on land you only rent is always a bit of a gamble really, while a club might have a very long lease, its clear from what Bye gets up to in Torbay, if the council really wanted the land the ground was on back, it will more than likely get its way.
I don’t think as long as gates are what they are at this time, that the board will feel there is any need just yet to build a new main stand, keeping the clubs head above water has to be the most important thing to be tackled and dealt with.
I now believe its unlikely I will ever see the Kingskerswell Bypass built before I die and that may also be the case with the main stand at Plainmoor. When you think where it came from and when, you soon realise it has had a very long life and I wonder if there are any stands that are much older still being used in a league ground.
