The world of Devon sport has a new top-flight team after the Exeter Chiefs beat big-spending Bristol Rugby 38-16 on aggregate to reach the Guinness Premiership through the Championship play-offs. Next season, instead of trips to Plymouth Albion and the Cornish Pirates, they can look forward to visiting Leicester's Welford Road, the impressive Franklins Gardens in Northampton and of course The Stoop, just round the corner from me and the home of the Harlequins. It really is an amazing achievement for the Chiefs to get so far, with Bristol having such a huge budget for success. For the first time in a while it will be a completely new team heading into the top division, with Worcester going in the opposite direction which will make it even harder for Bristol to get back because they are backed by even bigger money and have already signed two internationals for next season. I'll certainly do my best to catch a Chiefs away game next season, and might even haul myself down to Sandy Park if Torquay aren't playing one weekend. I've not visited yet (sure Barton has!) and it looks a decent arena, which might just need a little more expansion for extra Tarquins (eh Merse!)

Not really my sport but, yes, I've been to Sandy Park to see Ireland A play the New Zealand Maoris in the Churchill Cup. Guess I missed a trick last week by not seeing the 1st leg of the Championship play-off which I could have put alongside last weekend's trip to Wembley for the football equivalent. Bloody amateur, eh? Impressive set-up at Sandy Park and there's a real sense of occasion approaching the ground by walking the bridge over the dual carriageway. I'd certainly recommend a visit and they're now talking about eventually expanding the capacity to 20,000.

I don't think there was a Tarquin in sight in that excellent, raucous crowd tonight. There's something about the "Mem" ~ whether it's Bristol Rugby or (Goodnight) Eileen's Rowvurrs, if there had been any Tarquins there you would have seen the idiots putting their umbrellas up blocking the view of those behind in the horrendous downpour....................not a brolly to be seen; nor a wally underneath one! Go to Bath or Cheltenham for Westcountry upper class twits and ex uni types, Gloucester or Bristol for proper down to earth fans with a real desire to support their side come what may. I enjoyed that fantastic game tonight and have huge respect for a side that set their stall out and stuck to a game plan..........................when you have focus like that, money doesn't come into it ~ did I spy "Our Sal" out there on the pitch gamboling abouot llike a teenager? ;D

Well done to the Exeter Chiefs but after a 26 week charade the authorities got lucky as there was no guarantee that the top two teams would appear in this showdown with the best side winning.
And Merse, don't worry about this sports cling ons because it seems to me in your opinion that its all about them.
IS IT F*C*

Moving on, does this mean that Exeter is now a rugby city?

Fantastic effort from them to get into the premiership. Its taken quite a while but they are doing it the right way by not gambling loads of money on the club and get into trouble like Plymouth have done.
Will be interesting to see how many players they bring in, havent got much time now this is all over but of course they will be favourites for the drop next year. However you never know and if one other team has a mare of a season then maybe they might just survive.
Havent been to the new ground but have spoken to some who have and say its a excellent stadium and room to expand. A far cry from when I watched a few games at the old County Ground.....

Is Rugby a football town? Potentially - you'd have thought - but an underachiever with a complex history: Rugby Town, Rugby United, VS Rugby....

Why on Earth would you name a town after a sport? Is there a town called Football or Soccer, there is one called Badminton how ever, now that`s just plain daft to me, if it were a half decent sport then you could sort of get your head around it but Badminton nah doesn`t do it for me! Hook loaded, waits for bites!
