Even though I only had to go back to Clapham, this is the first chance I've had to sit down and read the thread since the game.
Thoroughly enjoyed my first league game of the season and I think the BBC's description of the match as a "dour clash" was a tad harsh.
There was a few people bashing Buckle's decision to bring on Cox for Mansell earlier in the thread. I will just confirm this was because Manse picked up a knock late-on in the first half which he couldn't shake off early in the second.
I can't really add anything to the excellent reports from Messrs Merson and Lambeth. I too was astonished to hear Furlong had been credited (or debited?) with an own goal because it was clear to me that Rendell rose above the defence to nod home. I guess the replays will confirm when they hit BBC Online in the next day or two.
If they hadn't sucker-punched us with that goal early on, I have no doubt in my mind we would have picked up three points last night. We absolutely annihilated them before they scored, but fair play to the lad, it was a tremendous finish - like watching a young DGEP out there...
A few positives:
The build up play was generally good - and in the run-up to Yukubu's injury it was superb. Benyon brilliantly kept the ball in play with a back-heel to Thomson who crossed dangerously for Zebs to run on to and his effort was just wide. Really encouraging stuff in the opening minutes of the match.
Then shortly after conceding, Thomson pulled the ball out of the air with a Berbatov-esque touch before stuttering and losing possession as the away end begged for him to shoot.
More positive moments came late on, with Stephens and Cox combining neatly down the left. And as seems to be the general consensus on here, Zebs looked a lot more dangerous when moved up top.
The only real negative point is our willingness to pump the long ball up field. Ugly and ineffective when someone like Benyon is the target.
But we should pull a lot of positives from last night's game. Yes, Barnet are on a dismal run, but we're not exactly cooking with Fabregas at the moment.
We dominated the game throughout and if we could have nicked an equaliser early on in the second, we would have won by two or three goals.
On to Saturday and another team off form: Bradford. Boo boys - stay at home please. Let's get behind the boys because they need it more than ever right now.
