Stefano, can I firstly congratulate you on a very well written and excellent post. Adult debate is what I have always stated the forum was set up for and I have always taken the view that when you enter into a proper debate you not only need to get your points of views across, you must also listen to the views of the person you are in debate with.
Each and everyone one of us is entitled to have our own views and a good debate will allays allow one to take the time to see if they should reconsider their viewpoint based on what they have heard or learned in the said debate. I do believe there should never be any need for abuse etc when entering into a debate and those that do then lose any argument they may have had and as far as I’m then concerned the debate is as good as over.
Debate should never be about trying to make the other person changed their views, but so often when someone can see things from the other side, or from a different angle they may just end up feeling they may have got things a bit wrong. The secret is never being afraid to admit when you have got things wrong and not stand and keep defending the same argument when it has been proved to be wrong. It’s also very important to always respect others views and their rights to hold them and that is what I know we both do and why we will always be able to enjoy a good debate between ourselves with out the fear of us ever falling out.
I love Aussie to bits but one big mistake he always makes is he expects and wants others to end up agreeing with him or at least meeting him halfway that may never always be possible if nothing has been said that would make someone feel they need to change their own viewpoint.
On the subject of fox hunting, I do apologise for some very lazy research work and the bits I used were from an anti foxing hunting site and as they gave the answer I wanted to give I used them without looking for anything written by the other side. Reading the part you written about the fact I got it wrong when I said it was only humans who kill for fun, I can see I got that all wrong and your examples are very good ones and ones I knew about only did not stop to consider. I should add that was not done as I just wanted to win the argument, it was more a case I had found something I wanted to just believe and then failed to look any further.
Many thanks for coming up with the name of the film, I expect it is the correct one and I will try and check it out, (only I expect if I do it will have me in tears again) that experience for me is just the same as the experience you had watching a very brutal fight live and right before your eyes.
My love for boxing has only even been via the TV and not live and just as I said I would like to watch just one F1 race to try and get a feel of the speeds they drive as you don’t get that feeling just watching the race on the TV, I expect if I had watched the fight you did live and see, hear and almost feel the real impact of those punches, its very possible I would have felt and held the same viewpoints you do now.
