If his team selection was as you say basesd on an attempt to pass the ball out from defence, why did he sign players who were not going to fit into the style of play he was going to adopt?
On your other point re a players standard being affected by an unacustomed role. Not all players are versatile. The angle the ball is received can often throw a player if he isn`t used to it. If you havn`t got a player who has shown he is a genuine versatile player wouldn`t it be less of a gamble to play a specialist player albeit with less experience but maybe more experience in that specific role?
As for Hodges I would have thought playing him on the left either at LB or LM would have been a preferred option. His experience would have helped calm the ship and get some quality service to the strikers, rather than the kick and hope of Nicholson. Or his ability to retain/use possession would for me have given him the edge over Carayol at the start of a testing game.
Still thats life. we often see and understand things differently.

Well on the evidence of yesterday, Hodges and Brough played the ball out in a far more constructive manner than Ellis, Robertson or Woods do. On the evidenceof Histon, Hodges again played a much more measuredand thoughtful ball out of defence than Nicholson does.
