Taking into account her electronic tag and 6pm-7am curfew, you might think Joan Higgins is some sort of hardened criminal. But in actual fact, this (along with a hefty £1,000 fine) is the punishment given to the 66-year-old for selling a goldfish to a 14-year-old boy. The pet shop owner was caught out in a sting operation by council officials in Manchester, who sent the youngster into the store to buy a fish. They wanted to test whether the great-grandmother's store would serve the lad, thereby breaking the 2006 law which states it's illegal to sell pets to under-16s. Because he walked out of Major's Pet Shop with the goldfish, Joan and her son Mark were ordered to appear at a magistrates court - despite them saying he looked much older than 14. At the hearing yesterday, Joan pleaded guilty and was given a £1,000 fine and placed under curfew for seven weeks, Mark was fined £750 and ordered to complete 120 hours of community service. Speaking after the hearing Mark said: "I think it's a farce. What gets me so cross is that they put my mum on a tag -- she's nearly 70, for goodness sake." I'm sure Merse and stefano will remember when we were young attending the fate in Courtney Park Newton Abbot. There was always one stall where you paid your money and got three ping pong balls, you had to try throw them into a jam jar and then you would win the goldfish that was in it. There must have been up to fifty jam jars on the table. To think all the young thugs who get away with near murder these days and this is what happens to a grandmother for selling a goldfish to a 14 year old. Wheres a good lawyer when you need one I ask.

Well I don't think the punishment is excessive and I sincerely hope that the poor fish has been taken into care and will be found a loving home for the future. People don't seem to appreciate that Goldfish are entitled to a loving and happy environment and the stimulating company of an adult over fourteen years of age ~ the same as you and I. I wonder how many of you Goldfish owners on here torment the little luvvies by putting them in a fresh water aquarium and confusing their little minds, terrorising them even; by surrounding them with sunken wrecks, lead booted divers blowing bubbles every few seconds and one of those pathetic little hump backed bridges. To say nothing of those dreadful giant clams opening and shutting their gobs all the time? Superior beings such as myself long ago realised that your average Goldish has a very short attention span (even less than a Sun Reader) and so likes nothng more than to be put in a bare glass bowl with absolutely nothing else to distract his little mind. Round and round he goes all day saying to himself "it's nice round this bend isn't it..............it's nice round this bend isn't it.................it's nice............."I've even tried to add the spice of variety to my little Shebunken Gloria's life by taking her out and drawing a pair of spectacle frames and a fake moustache on her face with a black felt tipped pen so that she can look at her reflection in the glass and think her husband has come home for tea and if she is lucky, they'll enjoy a little bit of "Ladies and Gentlemen" before tea time. I try my best to lighten her life but I guess someone will come on here and tell me I'm making unqualified and inconsistent efforts at animal welfare. Anyway, I think she respects me for that and only this morning I'm sure I caught her looking at me and she was saying to herself "There he is ~ the fool ~ living that boring non eventful life of his. I wonder what he does all day?"

are you surprised Dave? bombers, drug dealers, persistent assaulters of people sexually and physically and those that prey on children roam our streets unchecked, not forgetting the odd robber and murderer as well. The pc brigade have done for this country with there barmy human rights extremism, things did need monitoring agreed but now its out of control. The only thing i am surprised about is she didnt go to prison which would fit in with this barmy country, they chuck her details all over the place but wont reveal bulgers murderers details, not wanting to hurt his feelings, which with his track record doesnt show he cares a jot about anything. No doubt some loonies have sympathy for venebles, just like hindleys great admirer the late lord longford, who for years tried to get her freed,he never mentioned he wanted her living with him though,i wonder why?

Well i'm one of 'PC bleeding-heart liberals' who doesn't want to live in a society that sends lynch mobs around to paediatrician's houses in South Wales. Venables' crime was wicked, and his actions indefensible...but he was 10 years old for f**k's sake. Anyone who calls for the hanging/life imprisonment/lynching of a small boy (however wicked his actions) says as much about that person as it does about anything else.

Its not a popular viewpoint, but its a bloody sound one. I would be surprised if they were represented when getting that outcome. Were they?

I had a breif smile on my face when I learned that Huntley had his throat slashed in prison but that will probably upset some of the lefty p.c. brigade because apparently scum like that have got human rights!
