And a question for you: what is Bridport's link to the 1966 World Cup? It's where all the goal nets where made!

So were any of you other capital gulls at Plough Lane, the old Wimbledon ground on 27.1.1978 when Mike Green the player/manager scored with a header into the top rt. corner from a free kick to win it 1-0 . I was almost certainly the only gulls supporter behind the goal on the terrace. We went back there I think in the following years when we got beat 5-0 & 6-1 at home when they won promotion & eventually they left to play at Selhurst Park

I was almost certainly the only gulls supporter behind the goal I was there. I was in London that day and playing for Torbay Police against Lewisham Police that same afternoon. We stayed in a really grotty hotel on the Severn Sisters Road that would have made Fawlty Towers look five star, and on that Saturday evening we went to a night club in Tottenham modelled on the Saturday Night Fever one, where the DJ announced that we were the Torquay football team. Quite nice as half of us were genuine Torquay supporters and we had won in London that day (the other half of the team were Argyle, strangely no Grecians though - or they wouldn't admit it!!). Anybody remember that 6-1 home defeat against Wimbledon? Would have been about the same time, certainly late 70's.

Sorry Treetops having posted and then scrolled down further I see you've already mentioned the 6-1 thrashing at home. Another bleak day (or evening I think it was) .... we do have many though!

The 1978/79 season...
That 6-1 defeat was legendary... If I recall after the fifth goal went in the whole of Plainmoor were sarcastically singing 'We want six, we want six....' and when it went in the ground erupted. Or is my memory playing tricks? Didn't Alan Cork grab four for the Dons? Donal Murphy got our 'consolation' goal.
I was a mere teenager then and had been quite ill after having had a squash ball smashed into my eye and Mike Green invited me down to Plainmoor to have a cup of tea, a chat and a kick about during training with the boys and he was open about everything to do with the club answering all the questions I fired at him. Then I mentioned the Wimbledon game... He shot me a real look, grimaced and just said 'the coaching staff and the players talked about it the following day, then it was forgotton'. Maybe they should've taken more note because later in the season we went to Plough Lane and got beaten by them again.... 5-0!
Wimbledon got promoted and we were left mid-table.

What joker booked you in there Stefano? I live off the Seven Sisters and if it was one of those "hotels" overlooking Finsbury Park or just around that general area everyone knew them as knocking shops and now they are more regularly used to house the homeless It's no wonder football at our level carries a certain "stigma" when pot bellied big footed coppers get introduced as fit young pro's in a London nightspot! Here's a little "inside info" emanating from the Seven Sisters Road and it's many Algerian barber shops.......................it is being said that Zinadine Zidane is assisting with the preparation of the Algerian World Cup squad in readiness for their clash with England which although not until July is spoken of so often around here one would would think it was tomorrow. The Algies reckon he is the saviour and that if he became national coach they would sweep all before them and they also reckon he is so sickened by the racism of France that he would like nothing more than to take an Algrian side to Paris and kick their arses. Well see if this materialises, but if you "hear it in a barber shop it must be true"

A teenager then as well Budleigh you must be a bit like Peter Pan! The TFF pages in todays programme show you under a very interesting read headed "The Magpies" as having been a teenager in the 1931/32 season!! I suppose details of the original source and some quote marks could be missing!!

We did have a Football League connection with us though in the form of Lester Shapter who had taken a weekend off reffing to be our coach driver. It was he that had blagged free entry to the night club and had undoubtedly given the false information as to who we were! I wouldn't be surprised either if he had a hand in booking the hotel knowing his eye for a bargain ;D

I'm sure we were 3-0 down and looking well-beaten - but Wimbledon seemed to have "declared" on 3. Murphy pulled one back, we sniffed an unlikely point and threw ourselves forward - only to get hit three times on the break.

I can't remember the original post but I was away quite recently, but it is attributed to Budleigh in the programme. Was Chelston a teenager in 1931/32 then?
