In and around Torquay when you've got a complete sunday to spent?
With games on saturday and monday but no game on Easter sunday for us it's ideal for some sightseeing in the area. I've been to Dartmoor, it's brilliant.
I've been thinking about the north of Cornwall but that's quite a drive.
Suggestions anyone?

I don't know if you are Dutch or originate from Torbay but one of the 'newer' attractions in the South West well worth a visit is the Eden Project down towards St Austell. It's only about 1 hr 15 mins from Torbay taking it easy and it really is spectacular. I've been 4 times now as it is changing all the time so re-visits are worthwhile too. I appreciate it's not Torbay of course but if you have not been then it is worth it. It will be packed on Easter Bank Holiday of course but then again all attractions will. Hope you have a good trip ... not long now  |

I don't know if you are Dutch or originate from Torbay but one of the 'newer' attractions in the South West well worth a visit is the Eden Project down towards St Austell. Don`t bother with Living Coasts, it`s over priced, under stocked, very small and considerably boring! I much prefered the Plymouth Aquarium place with the massive fish and sharks, at least it doesn`t take just 5 minutes too walk around, you feel you get value for money there instead of feeling like you`ve just been mugged!

If this sort of thing appeals, you're better off going to the Lost Gardens of Helligan than the Eden project, imo. Less crowded, more to see and half the price. between St Austell and Mevagissey, Carol and I drove from here in the Bay to go and see them and could not find them  Seriously I thought they were nothing that special and I would not recommend driving all that way to see them. It depends on what you like doing, I know Rolf my dutch friend loves the heritage and history of England as I get the feeling Holland does not have so much history. Let me know the sort of things you like doing and I will give you some ideas. Some of the best things are free and we have some great cliff walks that Rolf loves doing. Dave |

I guess it depends what you're looking for, Dave. As a London-based, garden-starved horticultural bore, I loved it. There are better individual collections to be found elsewhere for sure, but as a lesson in 19th century gardening history, there are few places better. The kitchen garden - with its herbs and espallier fruit trees - was worth the entrance fee alone imo. Maybe I'm being a little harsh on the Eden project. But as a relatively regular visitor to Kew Gardens in Richmond, the heaving crowds of Americans, Japanese, bemused Europeans and thousands of kids at Eden were a distraction. How different to a visit to the palm house at Kew during the working week, where one is often the only soul in there. |

Lambeth, I'm probably being a bit unfair on the lost gardens, if you are a gardener or someone who loves planets etc, then it must seem like you in paradise when you are there.
The problem is Carol and I do a very large number of days outs every year and its hard for me to keep coming up with new places to go and see. I was working for a different company many years ago and did a lot of driving in Cornwall and had seen the signs for the gardens and put them down on my Might do list.
I do not like very much to do with gardens and If I'm honest I would rather have walked around some village we had never been to before.
I will say that Mevagissey is worth spending some time in and if you go through the gap and find the harbour and walked all around it you could think you were in Brixham as its so similar.
I would suggest ospelgull checks out the threads in our days out room, I'm sure he would find something in there he might fancy doing.

A nice day out in Dartmouth - nice steam train trip to Kingswear, Ferry across to Dartmouth, nice boat trip up the Dart to Totnes and return by Bus (If you're lucky it might be a Devon General one).
Plenty of time to stop for a bite to eat and a foaming pint of local ale.
Sounds like a good TFF day out in the summer during the boring days when Torquay aren't playing. Something for everyone.

First of all, thanks for all the replies so far! I've been through the days out section and found some nice places to visit, have to do it again and write them down as there are too many. In recent years I've visited National Parks, English heritage sites and places along the coast, so I guess that's where my interest lies. Must be plenty of them around Devon and Cornwall! In the near future I'll definitaly come over for a two week summer holiday together with the family. These short breaks are simply too short. |
