I can just see the headlines now if such a thing were tried over here..... The crampons are removable for non snowy weather. Have you ever been dependent on crutches for mobility? If so, would YOU fancy using them on icy streets?

Wouldn't fancy it in the slightest, Merse. My comment was more about the popular press and the damned if they do, damned if they don't nature of being a commissioner in the NHS. And so long as those we elect continue to model our health service on the British model rather than, for example, the French one, it will remain that way .

This is the time of year when I start to get jobs picking up the walking wounded at Eurostar or the airports who have done their knees, ankles or even worse on the ski slopes of Europe. One young lady today has returned home from La Plagne the proud owner of a brand new pair of crutches courtesy of the French Health Service to support her ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury. Thanks Merse!! Off to Cervinia next week so don't want you to put me off. Worst I dealt with in my four years as a ski rep was a lady with a fractured pelvis ... last day of course as it often was. Horrendous injury and problem. Basically not allowed to stand up for at least 8 weeks. Insurance company superb so off to Turin in to private hospital until she was well enough to travel back and husband flown out to be with her. Bottom line is I suppose always make sure you have insurance. As you pointed out the medical people in the resorts are superb. I worked in a place called Sestriere (the main skiing events in the 2006 Winter Olympics were held there). Cervinia next week will be a bit of fun I hope but to bring this site back to football matters (rather than gargantuam breakfasts!) I hope to catch AC Milan (if they beat Novara this Wednesday) versus Udinese (if they beat Lumezzane this Wednesday) in the Quarter Final of the Italian Cup.. So anybody think there is a weighting system in the draw? There is! I suppose we have got it to an extent with premiership / championship not in until the third round of the FA Cup, but in Italy they make an art of it to ensure that the top teams are competing in the latter stages, even if the clubs and the fans don't really care!! As I have now managed to introduce football into the Snow thread as I did with the Breakfast Plate I am sure that Aussie will now be sure that I am completley Barking!!

The Met are totally useless, right now we are meant to be in the middle of a snow storm and on Sunday we were meant to have snow! Westham postponed their game on Sunday of the back of the Mets weather report, guess what happened, it DIDN`T snow! £40 million worth of state of the art computer and a specialized fully decked out aircraft filled with science experts and the local farmer does a better job by wetting his finger and sticking it up in the air! Bloody joke that Met and total waste of time, space and money, tax payers money!

Don't knock it Oz, this thaw will hopefully allow football on Saturday! The forecast I saw for the rain/sleet/snow was early to mid afternoon anyway.

Aussie the hundreds, no maybe thousands who are stuck on Telegraph Hill tonight and probably won’t sleep in their own beds tonight wish the forecasters had got it all wrong. Rain moving up from the South and hitting very cold air currents coming down from the north make snow. But it’s more inland as the temperatures on the coast are higher and that’s why we are having rain. I’m really glad that’s all we are having and just hope things do not freeze up tonight, and then I will be able to get to work safely and get my work done safely as well, have you not had enough of this horrible white stuff yet? Most people I have talked to have and want an end to it all

Blimey the forecasters got it right for us!! At 3.30pm (well only 1/2 hour late) the snow hit us. an hour later there was 2 inches on the ground and we decided to close the factory.
It took me 3 hours to get home 6 miles while another 4 inches fell. i drove all the way in a Ford Galaxy 2 wheel drive. no medals but ok if your are sensible.
The other idiots worry me!!
While on a roundabout waiting at the bottom of a 1:6 hill, an idiot over took me on the inside, mounted and drove over the roundabout in his 4 x 4. H then proceeded up the hill on the wrong side of the road!! 2 further cars went the wrong way round the roundabout and up the hill. Are these people mad or what!!!
Half way up the hill the lorry ahead of me started to slide which left me no alternative than to stop which is the last thing I wanted to do. He eventually started moving again which left me trying to start moving again. it was more like a controlled slither which was exciting but scary too.
towards the top of the hill i was overtaken by a gritter lorry, which was fine but 3 cars followed and went around the next roundabout the wrong way. it is dangerous enough without these maniacs.
I got in to my street and semi-abandoned it. after my tea I went back out and cleared a space opposite my house, dug the car out and parked it for the night.
tomorrow morning should be interesting!! drive or walk?

Most people I have talked to have and want an end to it all I`m NOT on Telegraph Hill, I`m in Torquay and the weatherman said on Monday night that 10-10.30 a.m. Tuesday morning two weather fronts would collide over South and East Devon ( HERE! ), the map showed the fronts converging over us and then heading North East and depositing 10cm of snow, NOT lumpy rain at 2 p.m. They got it spectacularly WRONG again from where I`m sitting and hey they`ve only spent 80 million quid trying too get it right maybe they need another 100 million too refine it! Useless, reminds me of Micheal Fish, " Oh lets all sit round a table, have a coffee and make it up as we go!" their a joke! They tell the truth about as often as Alastair Campbell and he can`t even lie straight in bed!

I saw the pictures of Telegraph Hill on the news here overnight. To be honest I wasn't expecting the 2 inches of snowing we ,in West London, received overnight. We were expecting it on saturday or sunday and it never materialised. It's still snowing here in Kings Cross now.
