Mr Pedant has mounted his steed and will ride again - Actually the English language is kept more true to it's roots in the USA than the UK. Takes words like FALL rather than AUTUMN; we the English would have used FALL longer than we now use the word AUTUMN. This is all to do with influence from Europe and that English is the most changing language there is. When dictionaries were first published the Americans made a conscious decision to keep English as it was and not remove or amend the words they should use. The language split in the 18th Century, I think, and GB kept evolving whilst the Americas stayed put. The 'u' in Color is a French influence I believe. My facts could be a little awry here but ask Melvyn Bragg for clarification (he doesn't get out much either!). Sorry lads and ladies, this has nothing to do with the topic but I haven't had many chances to post on my favorite computer place for a few months! (I'll get me coat).
