Thank you ever so much Jon for finding the picture of the Spurs first team in 1965 with me in it as when I looked at it I instantly recognised one man and a flood of childhood memories came flooding back to me. Peter Godfrey who is a member on here and in the first photo and the man who so kindly sent me a copy as at that time I did not have one picture of me as a child as my ex wife had destroyed them all, has talked fondly on here about my Granny Best, Auntie Win and Uncle Ted who did all the food back in the 60’s at Newton Spurs. Now Granny Best lived at 36 Bushell Road on the Broadlands Estate and her house was in the circle at the very top of the road and right in the middle and this was a house I was often farmed out to as a child. Only when I had to stay there I would always be in the house next door with a man and his wife who I always called Uncle Les. I don’t think he was my real uncle but he was the man who gave me the nick name yapper. The very last time I ever saw him was when I was around nineteen years only and just married and living in Newton Abbot. I spotted him while out in the town with my now ex wife and wanted her to meet him. I introduced him as my uncle Les and told the story how much he liked me when I was a little boy as he would always give me sixpence to go to the local shops and buy some sweets. It wasn’t because I liked you he laughed; it was the only way to get you out of the house for a while so I could get some rest for my ears. There he is in the back row the one and only Les Nelson

[a href=" "] [/a] [/quote] Standing in the back row is the fearsome Harry Smith ~ Plainmoor legend, terror of the Frank H Mann wharehouse and erstwhile manager of Chelston FC to say nothing of being the father of Mark Smith who also played for Torquay United. Harry was one of those guys who could only give 100% for 100% of the time, even when he was well into the veteran stage of his on field football career and Justin has told on here before of his formative years working under Harry's tyranny for his father and grandfather's firm. Next to Harry is goalkeeper Mike Trout who came from Chudleigh and was no mean keeper either, playing (despite his lack of inches) for both Exeter City and Torquay United, and I think I might be correct in saying he played for The Gulls "first team" in the Western Counties Floodlit League. The other side of Mike stands Bill Bannister who was another fine player and the absolute alter ego from Harry Smith! Quietly influential though and another who played for Torquay United on a regular basis in the reserves in the mid sixties; he played on until his legs could do it no longer and worked for Tolchards as their Technical Rep visiting licensed premises ensuring all their equipment worked and I have to credit him with not only showing me the finer points of the "pivot system" (full backs covering central defenders) but also how to clean out beer pumps!, In the front row there are Kingskerswell lad Eddie Stentiford who also played for Torquay United reserves and was another ex Newton Abbot Grammar lad, the legendary Russell Peterson (Ipplepen, Newton Spurs, Torquay Utd, Poole Town, Bideford, Exmouth and latterly Liverton Utd where I heard he has still been tempted to turn out of late!) and Brian Wills who also played for Exeter City. A lot of football talent there, and isn't Bill Anderson wearing the same suit he sported in that Albert Hutchinson pic from The United public house the other day?

len blackmore is a face i remember seeing around newton, was he a devon general bus driver or a postie? Len was a former work colleague of mine on the buses in NA in 1973-75 and his younger brother Bill, who played with distiction for a very good Kingsteignton Athletic side in the late sixties and early seventies is a huge Torquay United fan! Len was a goalie who also played for Exeter City, and Bill a fullback.

.... and here is the first team. That pesky mascot gets everywhere! What I like in the two photos displayed by Jon are the footballs (the mascot's ok as well though! ). Head one of them on a wet February afternoon and you knew about it!!

It was Newton Spurs Third team 'The legendary' Russell Peterson turned out for, the only problem being, the local rag got hold of the story and put it in the paper. It was obvious that he wasn't 'signed on' and the SDL Management Committee couldn't wait to get the rule book out.
(O)(i) Any team playing an unregistered or otherwise ineligible player or players shall have the points gained in the match deducted from its total and be fined £20 per player and/or otherwise dealt with at the discretion of the Management Committee.
A good guy who spends a lot of his spare time during the summer months maintaining the Newton Spurs pitch.
