Len Coldwell wouldn't have been called a "fast bowler" in the days of Statham and Trueman opening for England, but he WAS the finest of medium/fast right arm bowlers in his time, and in partnership with Jack Flavell; a significent component of the wonderful Worcestershire side of the sixties alongside people like Don Headley and Basil D'Oliviera. My father and Len were great friends, having both been brought up in Manor Cottages off Wolborough Street and played cricket together for South Devon immediately after the Second World War (I would say Len was a good 10-15 years younger than my dad) and I can recall us getting Christmas cards from him as he toured the world on the MCC Winter tours.......................I remember too his mum and dad living in Sandringham Road, Buckland and his brother dying in the repair workshops at NA Railway Yard. When Len retired he became a rep for a brewery for whom he had worked during the winter months of his playing career, and one of his great friends was Tom Graveney who's nephew David Graveney has been the Chairman of the England Cricket Selectors. There is (or was) a changing pavilion named in his honour in Bakers' Park, Newton Abbot ........................."The Len Coldwell Pavilion"

Chester Barnes European Table Tennis champion but I'm not sure whether he was local or move there afterwards. He taught me in Brixham table tennis club and gave great exhibition games at Pontins Chester Barnes came from the East Ham/Barking area I believe, and now works for racing trainer David Pipe heading up the "Pipeline" betting and tipping sevice.

I think John Childs spent most of his childhood in Kingskerswell. He played for Essex for years and was 36 when he played his two test matches.
Len Coldwell - always described as "right fast medium" - was born in Newton Abbot in 1933 and died in Teignmouth in 1996.

Isn`t there two brothers in Brixham that play rugby for England and o.k. not quite the same but what about Glenn Mcgraths` late wife she was from Paignton. Continuing the Australian link there's also the three rugby league Henderson brothers: Torquay-born (UK rather than Victoria), Australian-raised and all capped by Scotland. Andrew: Balmain, Salford, Barrow, Castleford and Gateshead Ian: Sydney Roosters, Parramatta, Bradford and NZ Warriors Kevin: South Sydney Rabbitohs, Newcastle Knights, Leigh and Wakefield. According to Wiki they all answer to the nickname "Hendo". That's originality for you... Interesting observations from Ian: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bradford/7688460.stm Barton it`s an Aussie thing mate, where ever possible when giving someone a nick name the last part of the surname is usually replace by an `o`, i.e Mervo, Thomo and so on, it`s just our way!!
