I actually didn't know we played with our reserve team, thanks for that Jon. I agree it's a bit annoying that we can't lay claim to being Southern League Champions, it would be nice to have actually won something recognised (and no I'm not talking about the Devon Bowl ).

We're just unlucky! We reached the final of the Division 3 South Cup in 1938/39. The final was held over until the following season and bleeding Adolf Hitler went and invaded Poland just to stop us laying our hands on some silverware! We did win the South West Holidays Cup back in 1976!

It's quite funny that this thread mentions Peter Cook. I remember he did a sketch on one of those Secret Policeman shows back in the 70s where he sat on a park bench and irritated the crap out of John Cleese by relating a stream of "interesting" facts, introducing each one with "Did you know....?" I don't think he mentioned Torquay United though!

Has anyone ever actually seen Peter Cook at Plainmoor? I was totally unaware of the fact that he was a fan until he emerged from the woodwork in the build-up to the Sherpa Van final in 1989. I think he grew up in Bronshill Road, so probably went to games when he was a kid. Does anyone know if he ever came to a game (other than at Wembley) after he became famous? The only person I know of who had personal contact with Peter Cook was Hayden Jones who recorded a very good interview with him in Bambers Right Foot many years ago. Although I now live very near to where he had his London home, I wouldn't know exactly where his house was only that by the very nature of it being in Hampstead he must have lived very near Argyle's (just) living legend Michael Foote whom I have had the privilege of meeting and talking Devon football with! Another aged "celebrity" fan of a humble club (Chester City) passed away this week in the form of Hugh Lloyd the comedian who partnered Terry Scott for many years in the BBC series "Hugh & I" and as Romford Kev pointed out on here only last week rising comedian Andy Parsons (surely not him on here is it?) is also a Gulls fan.................not that I knew that when he was sitting behind me at the time!

Unfortunately, we did not take the "final" seriously at all. Rather like the "relegation" game at Colchester then!

Peter Cook a very famous comedian, was born in Torquay, on 17th November 1937, he was a life long fan of the club, often seen in the main stand. I'm sure I saw Pter Cook at a match many years a go ...possibly sat next to Gina Lolabridgida! ;D

One dear old man who always stood with me, for many years before he passed away, said to me often that Peter Cooke had watched many games from the main stand. There has to be someone, who sat next to him, or saw him in person.
Where is Colombo when you need him

Our relegation season from League two saw us set a new record. Not one we would have wanted to set but here it is:
Most games without a win - 20 (2006-07 season)

Didn't we once paint the away dressing room pink and the home dressing room blue. Apparently this was because pink was supposed to have a calming influence, the blue an aggressive influence?
It obviously worked well......I think we were beaten at Plainmoor 6-0 by Swindon in the League cup?!!

I was told a marvellous story by an old pro' once that shows just how times have changed. He said that the walls of the home dressing room were adorned with topless pin ups and the pages of the Sporting Life (just like they do in betting shops now) and this was at a fairly prominent Midlands big city club. Not only that but ash trays were dotted about for the players to use and if they won, a grateful director always had a crate of Double Diamond left on the floor in time for the final whistle!
